As far back as the first season, Locke was seen banging on the hatch in desperation, questioning his purpose on the island. In season 2, his arc revolved around his self doubt about being Jack's lapdog and also his unwavering faith in the island - that is until he watched the orientation video inside the Pearl. Frustrated, he came to the conclusion that he's been played and decided to stop pushing the button. When he realized he was wrong, he essentially let out a "Whoops." In season 3, he was torn by the presence of his father on the island. He couldn't bring himself to do what needed to be done, and Ben took the opportunity to exploit this weakness. By the end of the last season, he was contemplating suicide until Taller Ghost Walt came to him in a vision.
In this episode, the moment after Locke brought breakfast to Ben is a mirror of a scene in Season 2. Ben, once again Locke's prisoner, gets inside Locke's head. After closing the door, Locke takes his frustration out by breaking a few things.
