Julius Caesar - 8 of 10
Stars list - Marlon Brando

it turns out I have seen this before, in high school english but I think I slept through at least half of it. The play is excellent, one of my favorites and perhaps since I am farther removed from it now than I was then (watching it after we'd read the play in class), I think i appreciate it more. James Mason as Bruts is superb, Brando as Antony is is excellent, especially in the famous speech to the romans. outstanding. The actor who plays Caesar really delivers the dialogue so superbly that it sounds completely natural despite the shakespearian rhythm. I did love the almost coloquial way the shakespeare was delivered by virtually all the actors, much, much better than the OH SO IMPORTANT delivery of Olivier's Hamlet. actually delivering the siloqueys is much more effective than having them be voice overs. an excellent adaptation.
I see now that Joseph Mankiewicz directed this, no wonder everything was handled so utterly superbly, a straight up shakespeare adaptation in the hands of a master.
