welcome sparky, looking forward to your thoughts:
How the West Was Won - 6 of 10
Scores minilist
I think what surprised me the most about this film was how good the script was, I expected it to be a lot worse. The cinerama is unimpressive on the dvd format, at least in this non-anamorphic version. I'd be interested in seeing this in smile-vision or the next time it runs at the arclight cinemrama dome as I've been thwarted in all my attempts to see the past revivals there. I'm hoping it'll come back this year due to the impending special edition dvd release. Jimmy Stewart was the highlight of the film for me, though the Oregon trail sequence was also very good. I wasn't as enamored by the transcontinental railroad stuff, though the post railroad stuff was grand. The civil war material was much too short, it's too bad the rest of the film didn't have the concise compact storytelling and laser precision of that segment. and even the conversation between Sherman and Grant went on a little long as it was. unfortunately the confederate deserter in that scene was an example of some of the weakest writing of the movie. A classic example of an old fashioned set piece blockbuster this still is a lot of fun and quite entertaining.
And the score is indeed fantastic.
