Re: *** Official 2008 Oscars Nominations List and Forum Discussion Thread

There tends to be in these things the belief that the Academy is one person, or a group of co-ordinated people who favor one and snub another. This is, I feel, a mischaracterization of the process. There are only 5 nominees and the collective votes determine them. It's possible the 5th nominee beat the 6th would be nominee by 1 vote. In such a small sample population, there is a lot of arbitrariness that enters in. Also, its like making an individual top ten of the year list. Do you smile at your number ten as you usher it into your pantheon and scorn disdainfully at your poor number 11, forever cast aside to wander in perdition? Of course not. More likely you agonized before making your decision.

We all like to see our favorites do well and be recognized (partially because it validates our own opinions) but at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter that much. I'm not going to like or dislike a movie because it was or was not nominated. As for the unfairness of this process, well, that's life, inn't it?
