Its not a screw up, you are misunderstanding the fundamental POINT of IMAP versus POP3. IMAP is designed from the start to synchronize accross all devices. Now, I agree, that making all previous POP3 accounts switch to IMAP would be really confusing to people, but I dont think thats what they did, they just made the default IMAP now.
Personally, IMAP was just what I've been wanting, and I'm REALLY happy to have it both in the crappy $20 Mail application and the free google tools.
My problem is different than yours tho, I have several gmail accounts and cant seem to figure out how to let mail know when I want to stop using one and switch to another. Is that not possible?
