I agree with the films you mentioned, esp. Born on the 4th of July, for which he
should have won. But my problem with Tom Cruise is not his off-screen behavior (although his appearance on the Today show in '05 was awful). He seems to me to be an ego manic on screen. Does his contract mandate that a large percentage of the film be close-ups of him? Because that's sure as hell what it seems like. And I do think he has a tendency to overact, see any of his films after and including Days of Thunder or Top Gun (excepting the ones above), and you will see someone commanding the audience to notice that he! is! the! star! Add to that that his name is often larger than the title on film posters, and you can see why I tired of the on-screen Tom Cruise very quickly. Part of acting is humility and the man shows none in most of his performances.
Back to Star Trek, if Chekov is being cast, maybe we will see what he was doing before he was assigned to the bridge! Taking out the garbage in engineering, perhaps?
