Krell S-1500

Before I continue, I'll apologize for my ignorance, but I suppose this is the forum to learn about things. I freakin' hope.

I have a real insatiable need to learn about products that are way out of my league, so I was browsing through Krell's website and happened upon this beauty of an amp (the S-1500). I noticed that on the amp, there are what looks to be XLR inputs (similar to that of a microphone). Once again, excuse my ignorance, but what is this for? Is it an alternative for interconnects or for speaker wire? Is it something proprietary that I've mislabeled? Or is this common amongst equipment of this caliber?

And just as a bonus question, what the appropriate usage for banana connectors? Should you use them dually on receivers and speakers? Does it make an incredible difference?

Thanks for the knowledge. In advance.
