Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008
I love ST, more then the stuff Lucas made. I grew up on ST but, I could careless about continuity with this film. Just make an enjoyable, entertaining movie and I'll be happy. I don't care if they destroy the universe at the end and Picard and company are never born. As long as it is a fun movie to watch I'll be satisfied. If they focus too much on getting Kirk's hair just right, making sure there are no stardate conflicts or making sure all the planets are the exact same color as TOS is when the movie will have problems.
The hardcore fans will never be pleased because there expectations are always too high (look at the SW prequels). IMO, don't worry about the hardcore fans, just make a good movie. If those fans get upset that there "fake" ST universe comes crashing down around them and they now have to wake up to reality and face the real world, so be it. Just let the producers tell the story they want to tell. Why does it need to fit in with the other ST stories before it is beyond me. That's all they are, just stories. They are not real so why does it matter if it breaks this mythical continuity? If fans can't go back and watch old ST episodes, and enjoy them because this movie breaks the continuity, is just sad and complete BS. My DVDs will still tell the same stories no matter what happens in this movie. IMO, it is the fans that have ruined Star Trek by not embracing new ideas and always forcing ST producers to travel down the same road, all for this stupid idea of continuity.
