Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008
The best news IMO is this part:
Roberto Orci, without discussing a specific budget, added, "It'll be the biggest one. The economic models of the other [films] were very much based on the fans out there and their purchasing power. With this one we're going for the broad audience to bring people into Trek for the first time."
This statement about the budget is amazing news. I was so embarrassed for the Star Trek franchise when the title credits for Nemesis were simple white letters (in a stupid font) superimposed over the film. It screamed "low budget", and I wished for the day when a Star Trek film would have the same budget as a real movie. Sounds like that day is due.
I don't mind that this new Star Trek may be different than what came before, in terms of depicting the universe a bit differently. As long as the planets have the same names, and the personality traits of the different species are there in some form, that is staying true to the spirit of Trek. Even if the behavior manifested from those traits may be slightly different in this version of the universe.
That said, everyone has particular hopes about what elements of the current Star Trek universe might be nodded to in the next film as a sign of respect. For myself, I hope that T'Pol from Enterprise makes a cameo. She's a Vulcan, her lifespan is very long -- it would be great to see her, as a way of linking the new film to the Star Trek universe that was so beautifully built up in the recent Enterprise series.
