You must unlearn what you have learned.
In the fantasy would of comic books, a man who dresses up like a bat is NOT automatically crazy.
Bruce Wayne saw his parents murdered as a child. He realized that he had a duty to protect the all the other innocent people out there from the scourge of crime. He trained his mind and body to physical perfection, and then adopted the fearsome image of a bat to terrify those who would prey on the innocent. Batman is a character of compassion, not sheer vigilante revenge. He is a man who was traumatized as a child, and who heroically dedicated himself to helping others for the rest of his life.
Unfortunately, many recent writers have taken all this to mean that Batman is a psycho-ninja obsessed with revenge, and who can't have any sort of normal relationship/friendship with anyone (including, retrocatively, Dick Grayson, once his surrogate/idealized son in comics of days gone by), and who is an obsessive control-freak.
