Jeff,

Go the main menu, then inputs and at inputs for your where you have the HD-A1 assigned to, find main advanced,and in the main advanced section you turn "analog bypass" OFF.
The MC-8 will now redigitize the analog signal from the HD-A1 and you can use any of the 5.1a modes. Let me know if this works out.
