The Novel Quotes Thread!

Just some fun for those of us who engage in the sport of reading.

How to play:

Post a favorite line from a favorite novel, novella or short story and the first person to guess where it comes from gets to post one of their own. If 24 hours elapse without a correct answer, the original poster has to give the answer and gets to post another line. You can give one hint if you deem it necessary.

While I usually read history and science-related books, I occasionally dabble in fiction and I do have my favorite authors.

First up is an easy one:

"For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate."

Hint: this is an English translation of a French novel.

And no Googling!
