Not because it's not that good but because not even VIRIDIANA (1961), BELLE DE JOUR (1967) and PHANTOM (which are generally considered to be greater films) had earned such an accolade from you!

I don't mind Bunuel being "weird" or leaving things up to the mind but I was hoping I'd come across a film that had the same tone as those you mentioned but played it fairly straight. I might enjoy those above titles more on a second viewing but as of now DESIRE was the one that really took me for a shock.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Bunuel made the greatest last film ever

I haven't thought about this but not too many directors (or actors) end their careers with a great film. Kubrick's EYES WIDE SHUT comes to mind right now but I'd have to think of others.

Also, I don't know if you're aware of this, Mike, but the story on which the film is based, "La Femme Et Le Pantin"

I'm not sure which story came first but today I was thinking about the film and it also reminded me of DAISY MILLER from good ol' Peter B.
BTW, have you seen the Warner R2 set that has PHANTOM, DESIRE and CHARM? I noticed Xploited has this for $50, which would of course be cheaper than buying the Criterion versions. My stupid post office messed up my disc of CHARM and it was sent back without me getting my hands on it. They've already shipped my next title so I'll have to add it back to my queue.
As for IKIRU, I enjoyed it so much for the reasons you didn't like it as much.

I read that this film wasn't released in America for several years because it was "too Japanese" but to me it seems like the film was simply "too true".
