I love Westerns. Love 'em. But this a disappointing line up.
But, being a Hackman maniac, I might just go for The Hunting Party. It's one of the most violent, weird, moving, flawed Westerns ever made and ol' Gene is, as always, totally compelling.
Indeed, where is Day of the Outlaw? Superb Western. Robert Ryan is excellent. Beautifully shot in b&w by the great Russell Harlan and De Toth's firm control combine to create a solid, memorable Western. In addition to this, MGM should also release De Toth's brilliant anti-War film, Play Dirty (1968) starring Michael Caine, which they also own; there is no VHS, there was never a Laser and TV screenings are panned and scanned from 2.35:1 Panavision.
Man of the West, is simply put, one of the greatest Westerns ever made. I adore Mann's films and Man of the West is badly needed on DVD.
