We have taken an early look at the UK region 2 Special Edition release of Ronin and have compared alongside the current single-disc 2000 release. You can find the full, detailed comparison review here.

Overall, I think Ronin slipped off the critical radar because of its lacklustre plot, soft wind-down finale and its, perhaps, deliberate blurring of right and wrong, good guy and bad guy. Whilst populated with quality performers in front of and behind the camera it still only ignites when the cast are engaged in, admittedly implausible, but fantastic chases. The McGuffin of the case that everybody is after is a neat device, though. No-one ever finds out what is inside it, and much like Gabriel Byrne’s hat in the excellent Miller’s Crossing if it is not shown, then it is talked about – like a character in its own right.

Still, those two chases are the film’s saving graces. It seems words like awesome, incredible and hi-octane were created solely to describe them, and as stand-alone set-pieces they work perfectly; but I’m not too happy about the colossal list of innocents that get mowed down. Ahh, well, at least they didn’t kill either of the master modelmaker’s German Shepherds.
