I agree with you JohnAD. I have yet to see Saikano, but I have to say that of all the anime I have seen, Now and Then, Here and There is probably the most depressing one. At least Grave of the Fireflies is vaguely comforting in that it allows for a emotional release (as in makes you cry/weep). NTHT is not at all forgiving in that respect. And thus is a chilling portrait of the human condition as any...
