On the 57S500, under VIDEO setup options is "AUTO MOVIE MODE". This allows you to turn ON/OFF 3:2 pulldown detection.

As stated, the set supports native 540p/1080i scan rates.
Everything else is upconverted using Hitachi's VirtualHD™ 1080p, which they describe as...

"The VirtualHD™ 1080p digital video processor takes non 1080i high-definition incoming signals, like 480i or 720p, and upconverts them to 1,080 progressive lines. By examining every pixel of every frame, smoother curves and diagonals can be calculated while noise is reduced and color improved."

You have the option of displaying upconverted signals as either 540p or 1080i. 720p will always be converted and displayed as 1080i.
