Regarding the transfer, I've never seen this film on TV when it didn't look bad. Most showings have looked cloudy. My guess is that there are no decent original elements left. However, I'll leave that determination for someone who knows the history of this film. I would venture to say that although considered a classic, Warners didn't think this would sell well enough to warrant a "Casablanca" style restoration (assuming one was even possible).

Sometimes one has to enjoy the film for the story and acting and not get hung up over A/V quality, and this would be one of those times.
