Lew, I think the sour taste that both MY MAN GODFREY and THE LADY EVE left in my mouth is

the feeling that the men were both trapped into a marriage they didn't really want, and the "happily ever after" we're supposed to believe in isn't going to last very long. I felt really bad for both the heroes - I'm not sure if I felt worse for Godfrey, who felt more believable to me, or for Hopsie, who was either absurd, pathetic, or both - but either way, they'd been trapped at the end by conniving women.
Is that usual for screwball comedy?
