Make sure the drop from the pole and all internal wiring is RG6. Make sure all splitters are 1 GHz. An amp will not help if the incoming signal is crap. An amp helps if you want to drive multiple TV's

I also have digital cable thru Adelphia with the SA 3100 STB. Wayne is correct, the only time you get 5.1 dolby is on certain HBO broadcasts, such as the Sopranos. I do not have HD yet, so I cannot comment.
