I don't have the 860 but I do have the 950 and do not like it. I opted for the 950 because I could get it in black. Picture quality is good if you aren't picky about black being really black. The HDMI output for me was a problem....

All receivers and preamps have noise. The key is to have a signal to noise ratio large enough that the noise (hiss in your case) is not audible. It does sound like it's time to upgrade/replace the receiver.
The Ref 50 is the way to go. I went from the Ref 20 to the 50. The sound quality is excellent. Music has depth and detail. Movie sound tracks are also excellent.
