I believe you'd be able to do that except that you'll also need to hook up your DVD player to your receiver using component cable. You can't really "down-convert" from HDMI to component.
I think you might be able to find an adaptor to connect DB25 to 6 RCA connectors. Google on "DB25 to 6 RCA". Then you should be able to connect your Onkyo to any pre-amp or receiver with 5.1 preout.

Yes, that'll work. You'll just need to hook up both HDMI and component video cables from A3 to the receiver and assign the proper HDMI and component to the same input you select on the receiver (DVD, for example).
