I rarely buy TV on DVD however, Mission: Impossible is a “must-have” for me. I just finished watching the first two episodes and it is even better than I remember from back in the day.

I do no think you have anything to worry about. I think the -RW scarcity is because they are popular.
I would recommend the DirecTV TiVo. It records only in best quality and in Dolby Digital 5.1 when it is available. If you decide to add a DVD Recorder in the future, the picture quality of your recordings will be very good.

I think the hard drive adds flexibility. You can record to HDD or DVD. It is easier if you already have the HDD when you need it than try to add it later.
