We have had an AFI 100 challenge and we have had a Sight & Sound challenge (Still running I believe), So now we have "The HTF 100 Great Films of the 1930's Challenge".

This list is made up of the 64 films that myself and other members of the HTF, nominated and voted on in the '30s Tourney' I ran at the beginning of the year.
At the end of that tournament I took more suggestions and nominations to complete a list of the 100 best films of the 1930's by choice of various HTF members who participated in the tournament , From this point on I shall refer to these fine folks as our "Expert Panel"

The HTF 100 Great Films of the 30's, expert panel of classic film enthusiasts are...

Dana A, Evan Case, Gabe D, George Kaplan, Jay E, Jeff Amaris, Jim Armstrong, Jim K, Justin Doring, Luke B, Martin Teller, Rain, Rob Tomlin, Steeve Bergeron, SteveGon, Tommy G, Walt Riarson, & Myself

I really do feel that this list has just as much validity as any other top 100 list , and in some cases I would say even more so as We actually have a feel for who most of these people are and what types of films they may like or dislike. The same can not be said for any Academy or Select group of film critics.

The object here is rather simple in concept- To View all 100 of the films on the list- I see this as being somewhere in between the AFI and S&S challenges in the level of difficulty. It will most likely be harder to complete than the AFI challenge, yet would seem to be easier than the Sight & Sound Challenge.

If you are in question about a movie or what version it is, Just simply click on the linked title in the master list below, It should take you straight to the IMDB listing of the film in question.

I went back and forth on how to set the deadline and came to the decision of June 30th, 2004 (20+ months). If it needs to be extended at that point than it will be.

For your Consideration List

These are the films that will be eligible for inclusion, during the revoting, that will be held at the end of this challenge.

I'll bite.

Let's see, there aren't very many films on that list that I haven't technically seen, but quite a few are fuzzy enough to deserve a rewatch, especially if we're going to be voting on them. Therefore 29 on my to watch list:

Am I welcome to officially try this challenge? I'm generally limited to what appears on television and can buy borrow or rent on DVD or laserdisc.(I don't get TCM, and I no longer have a VHS player.)

As of the start of this challenge, I've only seen five of the list of films, which generally makes me a bit of a philistine wrt 30's film.

This is a great list of films and I urge anyone interested in classic films to participate in this challenge and see as many as these films as possible.

I always thought I was pretty weak in the 30's and this list confirms it, as I've only seen 33.

I am always up for a good challenge.

I was wondering when this was going to start. I've seen 74 of these (75 if Olympia is counted twice), and have 5-6 others on tape. Almost all of the rest seem to pop up frequently on TCM.

I'll certainly sign up.

24 films yet to watch or 24 films you have seen? You are in, I just need to clarify the number for the above list.

Now I need to get off my duff and count the films I need to see :b

Okay I have seen about 60+ of the films but am also a bit fuzzy on a few. So my seen total will start at 42, leaving me 58 films to watch.

Ok, I'll add two seen for the Spanish-language Dracula and the additional Olympia. I'll take three off because I'm sorta fuzzy on Dr. Jekyll, Hound of the Baskervilles and Topper.

My current count is therefore 73 seen out of 102.

For now We'll leave the count goal at 100, the other two can be considered extra credit. so your total would be 100 - 73 = 27 yet to watch.

Maybe later I'll take a vote on how to handle this. Maybe count the two Olympia's as 1 film and make the Spanish language Dracula an optional bonus film?

Quick recount, I've seen 34 plus the Spanish language Dracula.

I'm not going to make much of an effort on this until I've finished the S&S Challenge and am closer to being caught up on my DVD backlog.

Put me down for 30 seen. There's a few more that I've seen partially or a long time ago, so I'll check those out again.

AMC is listed where it should say TCM.

I've seen a lot of the movies on the list, but will pursue some that I haven't since they're reccomened. I'm interested in The Grand Illusion on DVD...

Do you mean the listing for Bringing Up Baby?

That is indeed on AMC, So I posted it in blue and made sure to specify that it was on AMC rather than TCM.

While AMC pretty much sucks now I had hoped to find a few more classics. But their website schedule is outdated and it seems that in the next 2 weeks "Bringing Up Baby" is the only film from this challenge that they will be showing.

My standard listings are for TCM, but I will also try to keep you all informed should some of these movies pop up on AMC, Fox Movie Channel, and perhaps even Sundance or IFC if they ever run some of the foreign films on the list. I will always make sure to list those times in a blue or red font, so one does not set their VCR or PVR to record TCM at that time.

Hm, I had thought that I was pretty up on 30's films but I've only seen 42 of these. Unfortunately, so few of the others are on DVD that this is not a very appealing challenge to try to make up the other 58; even if I caught all the ones I'm missing on TCM that only gets me to 68. I blame Warner for sitting on most of these. Good luck finding a copy of Olympia; even with Riefenstahl getting some good press on her recent 100th birthday she's still pretty much reviled. I saw Olympia I in film class, and despair of ever seeing Olympia II.

Nice list though. I'm having a hard time thinking of any pictures that ought to be on it and take the place of ones that are there so I'd call it a job well done.

I like that thought. Reset my counter to zero, as well.

I've only seen excerpts (albeit substantial), so I put them both on my not-seen list. One would think that enough time had passed. After all, its not that hard to watch Birth of a Nation, which for me as a citizen of the U.S., is a lot more difficult to view without prejudice.

Brian : Okay, I'm in. It looks like I've got my work cut out for me. At least by comparison to most other people in this thread.

But I'll have fun trying. Gone With the Wind was wonderful. Next up, King Kong or The 39 Steps. (now to scour eBay for a cheap laser copy.)

Edit : It'll give me an excellent reason to finally buy a TiVo. And since OAR of 30's films is nearly Television AR, I won't be breaking my rules of home movie watching.

The complete Olympia has aired on TCM a few times (artistic nudity and the occasional Nazi glorification intact, as well). Don't know when it will air again. Not until 2003 at the earliest, it appears.

Caught Holiday last night via time-shift of TCM. At least that won’t be necessary for Top Hat. My wife left for the bedroom TV, mentioning, “I know how this one ends.”
