Thanks Rick, the tv is about 6ft or 7ft from where we sit which is quite near I suppose. But the way I see it if I'm going to get a bigger tv, my previous was a 32inch Hitachi, and I push it to the back of the room because of the size than what have I achieved? It'll look about the same size as my previous tv from that distance so we kept it at the same position. It is a lot brighter, too bright I have it on "dynamic mode" which made the Incredibles stick out like it was friggin' 3-D! So I still have a lot of tweaking and experimenting to do before I get it to the 'optimum' settings for our abode.

Glow? My eyes are still sore from looking at Incredibles in dynamic mode!

Next animated movie I watch I might be wearing sunglasses. [snort] I'm tempted to bring the tv closer, not sure Sandra will want that coming between us though. [falls off chair]

Why thank you Elizabeth, it was inevitable wasn't it?

300 'blu' movies already eh. Impressive. Let's see how many I have this time next year. All depends on how much cheaper they get too...

Hoho nice, the Darth Vader pooch looks like he's already crossed over to the dark side.

Elizabeth, you're not the only member complaining about not getting the Boondock Saints in their area, check out the Box Office thread.

Boo! Everybody have a good Halloween? Poltergeist was our big horror movie, still enjoyable after all these years. And I watched the first and best Halloween movie later. Hard to believe it's 31 years old. I still remember the cinema posters for it.
Where is Russ? The scary challenge is over and the host is missing in action. Who won? I think I came in last with 9 films listed, he proudly boasted.

I bought Snow White on blu and a blu-ray player to play it on. I'm fully blu now, woohoo!

Weakest Link a few minutes ago -
Anne - What is the surname of the famous family of actors named Henry, Peter, Jane and Bridget?
Young lady - Bardot?

Re: Weakest Link, I recall a Jeopardy show about a month ago where the final category question was Movies.
Paraphrasing the question: Name the AFI 100 star who only appeared in three lead roles.
One of the contestants answered: Jimmy Stewart.
(Now to be fair, I am certain that this individual would probably best me in plenty of other categories.)
By the way, the answer (which I did know) was:
Warning Spoiler! Click to showJames Dean
- Walter.
Fidelity to the source should always be the goal for Blu-ray releases.

I'm here! Yes the scary movie challenge is over, but the final tallies are still trickling in, so maybe tomorrow I'll post the final final update and kill the damned thing already!
Congrats on going fully blu Steve! JNow go buy THE PRISONER in Blu, I think I'm going to end up doing it!
Here's a music magazine I saw on vacation in Athens.

Titty galore. Nice video chief.

Gotta love those European magazine covers, here in boring Britland we get um let's see... Empire magazine has... Russell Crowe as Maximus, yay! Total Film... the cast of New Moon, hey I didn't even see Old Moon! Or even Moon for that matter. [[bites fist] What else... aah good old Radio Times, whats on the cover... Michael Caine! Typical eh? I don't know why I still buy Radio Times, we can get all the info online now and it's not like I watch a lot of tv or listen to the radio.
Russ, Jim thanks yep I've bowed to the inevitable and turned Blu. I'm watching the extras to Snow White and they look very sharp and clear, is there a way of telling if I'm watching blu-ray extras or upscaled dvd extras? Or it doesn't really matter? The menu on my Philips blu-ray player gives the option to choose 480 720 1080 or auto, should I make sure it's 1080p or just leave it on auto and let the machine decide?
I made a list of 100 films I want on Blu-ray and was shocked to discover many are still not available yet, what no Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, LOTR trilogy, Alien Aliens, Jurassic Park, Dune?

I leave my PS3 set to auto. Everything looks nice, so it's good enough for me.
I haven't made a list of movies to rebuy on Blu, I'm looking more at special features and price then anything else. I wasn't going to buy that Wizard Of Oz set, but all those new features, I just had too!

I just popped into the HD area and was reminded the Hitchcock classic
North By Northwest is out on blu-ray here soon, next week I think. Can't wait! It's one of my favourite films, in my top 20.

Rick, I found Dune at Amazon, shipping from Denmark. £25. But I think I'll wait and see if there's a UK announcement early next year, before deciding.

Lucky girl, it's coming out on the 16th over here. Your first viewing? I think you'll enjoy it. See if you can spot Hitch's cameo, he makes an appearance right after the opening credits, missing a bus. There's a screenshot somewhere in this labyrinthine thread.

I've already hacked my blu-ray player so it can be multiregional, the hack was in a review on the Amazon product page. Unfortunately multiregion only for standard dvd. I don't think I can play the US North by Northwest blu-ray on my player, unless it's region-free.

That is interesting Elizabeth, I don't think we're getting the booklet over here, damn. It's £17.99 at PlayUSA and they say that it will only play on North American machines. I should wait and see what we get over here.

Thanks for the link, sad to see that Young Frankenstein isn't region-free. I wanted that and it's not available here.

I found this interesting -
Quote:
The X-ray machine has been named the most important invention in the history of science, in a poll by the Science Museum.
Nearly 50,000 people voted on a shortlist of ten inventions and discoveries, which included penicillin, the first computer and Stephenson’s Rocket. The X-ray machine was a clear winner with 9,581 votes.

Announcing the result at the Science Museum today, Ben Bradshaw, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said the result reflected the public’s appreciation of advances in medical science. “The winner is also testament to our insatiable curiosity to find out how things work,” he said.
Overall it was medical advances that fired most people’s imaginations. Penicillin came second with 6,825 votes, closely followed by the DNA double helix with 6,725.

I'm pretty sure the x-ray machine wouldn't even be in the top 10 if the entire country had voted for any invention, Television, cellphones, the Internet and the ipod would be somewhere at the top methinks .

I also believe that the invention of the X Ray machine was also the genesis in use of the phrase:
"Badges! We don't need no stinkin' badges!" before its claim in fame in Blazing Saddles.
This of course lead to every department other than nursing to wear these badges to determine the amount of X Ray radiation
they were getting and if were getting to much to stay away for a few days. Nursing was just told to step out of the room for
a minute.
