Rick. Russ sent me an email, he seemed angry with me for not participating more in the challenge, I replied that I was fully prepared to give it a go until a couple of the silly sods started leaving their videos on all day and IMO spoilt the game. However many I watch I won't do more than a fraction of their final score, so I'll just watch the occasional horror and list it, I'm still in the game but only just.

I was going to watch a horror flick tonight until I spotted John Carpenter's Dark Star on the shelf and had a sudden urge to watch that instead, goofy sci-fi but no I can't count it as horror.

ooh Russell someone's had enough of your fookin' language in the horror challenge, the threads gone from fargin' 13 to R rated because of you! Tomorrow someone might suss out that you haven't actually watched any horror movies yet. [snigger]

Damn  Steve, isnt it almost 2 AM? Dark Star is funnier when your sleep deprived, i guess.
You guys wont get offended if i say damn, will yeah?

I expected Russ to get back into the game, defending his "review" of the Godzilla movie. But he must be formulating his counter argument. Or he wants to be #1, and he is getting 20 movies under his belt by midnight!

Yup, I'm on my 125th film!  I've decided that just thinking about movies counts!  I win!

Steve, Godzilla movies count damn it!  Any movie with a monster, especially bashing about counts.  Snow White counts too I think, the witch is scary!  :P

I'm not defending my review, because seriously, fuck the plot, it didn't need one, it had a shitload of monsters in it, nuff said. ;)  I thought it was a horror movie thread, not a Shakespear discussion.

I was sad to see that Roger Ebert didn't enjoy Rape Squad as much as I did. :(

Yeah I was nearly off to bed when I saw your post Rick.

And I thought I'd mention these Samsung birds I've got here at the top of the forum over in feedback, they chase my pointer all over the place. Have you ever had birds chasing your pointer Rick? It was one bird, but now there's a 2nd Samsung ad and all I seem to be doing is opening the Samsung home page.

Maybe it's telling me it's time to go hi-def, it's a sign!

Well Dark Star had an alien shaped like a beach ball. Not really scary though.

Is Silence of the Lambs a horror film? I suppose if a film has the ability to scare an audience than it can be included. Dirty Harry had a serial killer too but the film wasn't scary. Van Helsing scary?

Van Helsing would count because it's emotional torture to watch in the first place.... NARF!! :P

I've never seen Dark Star, so I have no idea if it counts.  Way I see it, if the main drive of a film is the monster, then it pretty much counts.  Last year I watched "The Day The Earth Caught Fire", and wasn't going to count it since it's pretty boring and the threat is the earth falling into the sun or whatever it was, no monsters, no horror element... 3 people told me it should count, so there you go.  Before I started playing along they had the rule "If the blue monkeys in the Wizard Of Oz scare you, it counts".  Obviously previous years were bogged down in nerd debates and Matt Stone or whoever it was threw that in to keep it on track.  Rape Squad was technically a sleazy crime thriller, but man, that Jingle Bells guy was up there for menace, and grindhouse films go hand in hand right?  "Dark Star" was always considered drive in fare, and John Carpenter is a horror icon, I 'd count it.  "Elvis : The Movie"... not so much...  ;)

I'm not losing any sleep over it, hell, I'll probably get kicked out for bad language before it's over I guess...  A bunch of people will quit anyways halfway through when I get annoyed with the whole thing and start posting swear filled reviews of horror porno films with screen caps. :P

Nothing is chasing my pointer. How do you rate Steve? Samsung wants you! If, and when you go Blu, go Sony. Thats my 2 cents, for what its worth.

Russ, Godzilla counts, it counts man! I only own 3 of them myself, and i cant remember the names of them, cept Monster Zero!

Do horror comedies count? Abbott and Costello? Young Frankenstein? Space Bollocks the Movie?

I'll definitely watch a horror tomorrow Russ promise and I will tone down my language just in case and make sure the picture I post won't have any blood or nudity. I may just post the title of the film.

Rick, I've got my sights set on a 37inch Toshiba, £450, good price. 1080p. I'll order the cables first just to prepare myself. A 2 meter hdmi and scart to hdmi should be okay. The Toshiba even has a USB slot, why I don't know.

Many TVs have USB slots now. Some can be used for pictures, and some TVs have them for firmware updates! Why, i have no clue. Even my Denon receiver can be hooked up to the internet for firmware updates. Mine isnt, nor is my TV. But i do update my Blu-ray player when i need to.

I already have a plays-everything except HD Philips dvd player with upscaling abilities, so I've taken a first step on the road to hi-def. Once I buy the HD tv everything else will fall into place, I just dread buying a blu-ray player and some of you already know why.

Russell, Comrade Reubenovich has reviewed a documentary you may be interested in, it contains "plenty of film clips featuring (as the box cover promises in a rare case of truth-in-advertising) “gratuitous nudity, senseless violence, car crashes . . . and a bit of kung fu.” and it's hosted by Quentin Tarantino! ooh. It's called Not Quite Hollywood and deals with "Ozploitation films" [snort]. Should be worth a watch eh?

I will be watching a horror film tonight, I'll just make sure I don't glance at the sci-fi shelf when I'm picking one. Yep I have my dvds sorted out by genre. Makes sense when you're in the mood for a certain type of film.

Just saw this, Adrian Brody in a Predator movie?  I'm not sure this should be supported or not, but I'll go see it :P

Adrien Brody in the Schwarzenegger part? Nooo I just can't visualise it Russ, maybe if he played the predator instead. Why are they remaking this still stonking good action film, are they insane? I wouldn't be surprised if they remade Verhoeven's fantabulous RoboCop next. Bastards!

You mean this Robocop?

I love both the originals of these, I doubt the 2010 remake of Robocop will be as deliriously nasty as Verhovens.

I live on the same continent as Michael, but I bet we're about the same distance.  I'm R1 though so Michael should send it to me.  how about it Mike?  :P

[spits drink] Unbelievable. The original is an 80's sci-fi classic, cyborg films just don't get much better than that! At least if it was anime or something unusual.

A Total Recall remake is planned too [bites knee] but at least with that one they might make it more faithful to the original Philip K.Dick story "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale".

So, is anyone going to see "Astro Boy"?  Every time I see ads for it, it just doesn't look or feel right to me.  I grew up on Tetsuwan Atom and even had little rain boots with him on it.  It took an adjustment even to think of him as Astro Boy many years ago.

Nope. I was more a Marine Boy fan anyway...and Kimba!

How the HELL can they remake Predator! Thats just not right. I am OK if they want to remake Total Recall. Its not THAT good, but Predator is sacred ground!

It's a no for me as well, I was excited when I heard about it, but it looks awful.  Animation looks cheap, and yup, just awful.

I liked the 80's astroboy in colour.  It had a feature where Astro would tell professor Flutenose about the adventure you jsut watched, and you had to guess what part Astro goofed up telling.  The bastard part was, they never told you what the answer was, and he never seemed to screw up telling the story!  I bet it got lost in the translation!

Youtube's not working for me so you're saved from that theme song. :(

Oh I loved Wacky Races [smiles whistfully] What else.... Thunderbirds, HR Pufnstuf, the Monkees, Banana Splits, Ron Ely's Tarzan? Jon Pertwee Dr. Who? Catweazle?  memories of an age long gone.. Thumbs up on Thunderbirds and the Monkees!  I didn't care to much for Wacky Races, it aired to random around here.  I like Dr. Who, but I'm a Patrick Troughton man.   I just can't get into the current Doctor Who series.  Catweazle?  What's that?  you mean Bagpuss?

I liked Troughton's Who too, some of those early episodes gave me nightmares as a child.

Catweazle was a British fantasy series about an old wizard, played by Geoffrey Bayldon, who accidentally travels thru time to the 20th century and befriends a young boy.

And that's the last shot from the film Walter, the alien not realising that he could now be seen looks up at the shocked woman he was having sex with and says "What's wrong baby?"

Nasa bombs the Moon creating new dimple... but where was the flash?

The surface of the Moon did get 'bombed' by Nasa today in its search for water ..... but the big live public drama people anticipated didn't quite happen.

Nasa were today furiously trying to deny the mission had been an anti-climax by stating their precision instruments had 'worked fine' and they'd received 'very promising data'.

c8c95ae1_Moon crash.jpg

But Nasa's director at the Ames Research Centre Michael Bicay admitted: 'We didn't see a big splashy plume like we wanted to see.'

Prior to impact some scientists had claimed that there was chance that it would be clear within an hour of the collision whether there was water on the Moon. Now Nasa say it will probably be two weeks before they will be certain about the answer.

Instruments confirmed that a large empty rocket hull barrelled into the moon at 11:31 GMT today, followed four minutes later by a probe with cameras taking pictures of the first crash.

Screens then went fuzzy and there were no immediate pictures of the crash or the six-mile plume of lunar dust that the mission was expected to produce.

96294223_moon crash 2.jpg

For the millions which followed the crashes on the internet and at observatories across the world there was some degree of puzzlement.

Nasa officials said their instruments were working, but live photos of the actual crash were missing.

Three studies released last month found clear evidence of water on the moon, welcome and surprising news for further space exploration, since water can be turned into fuel.

The photo of excited children with their parents staring at a giant screen in Washington waiting for NASA to show them something exciting and spectacular and of course it ain't gonna happen. They wanted to see the moon blow up, but it's still there dammit! Maybe next time.

Welcome!  You're just in time for us to bemoan the lack of the moon blowing up.  Christopher DAC has been trying to get it exploded for years, poor sod must be sad.

Why are they trying to find water on the moon anyways?  I learned in school that it has no water and can not sustain life.  This progress is for the birds I tell ya!   Who wants wonky looking moon cabbage anyways?  What they should be doing is tryig to harness massive amounts off energy so we can cross into other dimensions and try to pull a Cthulhu into our world!  That would be sweet!

Marge Simpson poses for 'Playboy'

Marge Simpson has done something that Homer might approve of but will make Bart the proudest kid in his school: She's posed for Playboy magazine.

After more than a half century featuring women like Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford and the Girls of Hooters on its cover, Playboy has for the first time given the spot to a cartoon character. And the magazine is giving the star of The Simpsons the star treatment, complete with a data sheet, an interview and a 2-page centerfold.

5f85dcfe_simpsonsmarge.jpg

The magazine's editorial director, James Jellinek, won't say exactly how much of Marge will show in the November edition that hits newsstands on Oct. 16 — or whether she lets that big pile of blue hair down. But, he said, "It's very, very racy."

But he stressed that the mother of three — the youngest a baby, by the way — has a lot to be proud of.

"She is a stunning example of the cartoon form," he said on Friday at the magazine's headquarters in Chicago, appearing both pleased and surprised at the words coming out of his mouth.
