Oddly enough I've yet to see Armitage III. I think I passed it up because of some mediocre reviews on some Anime website.

Well I've got The Skeleton Key lined up for tonights viewing (or this afternoon depending on if the playoff games turn into a bore). Some sort of Voodoo themed Horror film starring Kate Hudson.

It was either that, Crash (which I've been avoiding) or Dark Water (Am I the only one getting tired of Hollywood remakes of these snail paced Asian horror flicks?).

Hopefully it won't suck as much as the other recent Horror films I've seen.

It's Zhang Ziyi in 2046, Steve. Not really your cup of tea, I would think, but there's definitely some sex in it!

Oh yeah you mentioned that film before Haggai, set in 2046 with cool cars flying around a futuristic city, robots everywhere, explosive action sequences etc or is that wishful thinking?

I watched The Skeleton Key fairly recently Jim, quite enjoyed it, spooky horror, it has a good shock ending you won't see coming, which makes a change.

More freebie dvds with the weekend papers and it's getting ridiculous, yesterday Conan the Destroyer, today Highlander (1986), and another paper had Dune (1984), which I picked up, why I don't know I've already got 3 dvds of Dune here and another is on the way. I can always lend that one out I suppose. All dvds are in their correct ratio and anamorphic, sound is just 2-track stereo, Conan is mono.

Er, yeah, that's not exactly what it's about... A couple of the women (though not Zhang) do dress up in futuristic costumes for some hot man-on-android action, but it's well into goatee-stroking territory, not regular sci-fi or anything.

Still getting those freebie DVD's? Do they come in a keepcase?

Are these legit copies or does the British news industry have a secret bootlegging operation in the works? Sounds like a job for MI6 to break up.

They just don't write 'em like this anymore:

[Boy:] On a hot summer night,
would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
[Girl:] Will he offer me his mouth?
[Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Will he offer me his teeth?
[Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Will he offer me his jaws?
[Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Will he offer me his hunger?
[Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Again, will he offer me his hunger?
[Boy:] Yes!
[Girl:] And does he love me?
[Boy:] Yes.
[Girl:] Yes.
[Boy:] On a hot summer night,
would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
[Girl:] Yes.
[Boy:] I bet you say that to all the boys!

[Sung:]
It was a hot summer night
and the beach was burning.
There was fog crawling over the sand.
When I listen to your heart
I hear the whole world turning.
I see the shooting stars falling
through your trembling hands.

You were licking your lips
and your lipstick shining.
I was dying just to ask for a taste.
We were lying together in a silver lining
by the the light of the moon.
You know there's not another moment
Not another moment
Not another moment to waste.

You hold me so close that my knees grow weak.
But my soul is flying high above the ground.
I'm trying to speak but no matter what I do
I just can't seem to make any sound.

And then you took the words right out of my mouth.
Oh it must have been while you were kissing me.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
And I swear it's true,
I was just about to say I love you.
And then you took the words right out of my mouth.
Oh it must have been while you were kissing me.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
And I swear it's true,
I was just about to say I love you.

Now my body is shaking like a wave on the water
And I guess that I'm beginning to grin.
Oh we're finally alone and we can do what we want to.
The night is young
And Ain't no-one gonna know where you
No-one gonna know where you
No-one's gonna know where you've been.
You were licking your lips
and your lipstick shining.
I was dying just to ask for a taste.
We were lying together in a silver lining
by the the light of the moon.
You know there's not another moment
Not another moment
Not another moment to waste.

er no Jim they come in cardboard slipcases, I've picked up quite a few in the past couple of years, some are films I would never have bought but since they're giving them away... The African Queen and Moby Dick were free, nice to have them on dvd until special editions finally arrive. Spellbound and Notorious were freebies too.
But people must wonder why dvds cost £10-£20 when famous films pop up free in newspapers.

I never saw Perfect Blue, and I tried to get to the one theatrical showing of Millenium Actress within a hundred miles of here, but I didn't make it. I did see Kon's Tokyo Godfathers, and liked it pretty well: it wasn't what you'd call original, but it was quite well-done. Perfect Blue is something of an odd case, because it was originally planned as a live-action B-movie before the Hanshin Earthquake put a wrench into the production company's works; the result is what most reviewers call a Grade-A anime.

As far as Battle Angel goes, I would wish Cameron all the luck in the world, if he hadn't put all other versions on moratorium for the past five years or so. I'm not sure about the manga, but I do know that the DVD version is well out of print, and [being an ADV release] the LD was pressed by Sony DADC USA, the very home of Laser Rot -- my copy is bad both sides.

Jim: If you can, I recommend the 4-episode OVA version of Armitage, preferably [of course] with original Japanese dialogue and subtitles if you feel the need, over the movie version. The movie was recut from the OVA, and released in English in Japan with the voices of Kiefer Sutherland and Elizabeth Berkely. It leaves out, in my opinion, some stuff which makes the OVA version much better. Of course, I have both versions, partly for the AC-3 5.1 soundtrack on the movie...

When watching anime or any foreign language film I prefer to watch the original language and in the case of anime preferably in Japanese audio with "Engrish" subtitles.
The Battle Angel Alita manga series is above and beyond in terms of story content than the one-shot OVA. Forgot who releases it domestically in collected form but I used to check them out from the library all the time.
I really enjoy the Akira film but once again the manga far outweighs the film. Mebbe Otomu could get it done as a mini-series in the same type of style as the film? Also played the Famicom game and couldn't find a fan translation of it.
Patlabor is another of which I've only read the manga and played the Super Famicom game. Did watch the first OVA of it and loved it way back when. May consider a rewatch.
Also have seen Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away (watched the dubbed), Macross Zero, Gunsmith Cats (not the enitre series though), Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell and numerous others.
Got really into various Gundam series when I was heavily into anime before I found I couldn't really afford it due to the overpricing.
Ghost in the Shell manga was also better and more intricate in terms of plot development than the film. Haven't seen the Stand Alone Complex OVA and only the first 30 minutes of GOTS 2.

Guess that's basically my two cents into the anime discussion.

I wasn't aware there was an OVA but I'll check it out in the near future, thanks for the heads up Chris.

Well Skeleton Key turned out to be a decent little thriller & like you said Steve, with a killer twist ending.

Dammit! I was going to to change my sig to a Zhang. Either that or Chiaki Kuriyama. Anyone got a good Go-Go shot? Nice sig pic Haggai.

Steve, that was in NO particular order. My fave so far has been Haibane Renmei OVA. I'm a sucker for the sap. There is just too much out there for me to see or buy it all. I think anime is way over priced; knowing that devout fans will pay the prizzle.

Wow, Zen's going to *gasp* *wheeze* change his sig? An epochal event in these parts!

No Go-Go shots handy over here...I'm sure Steve could capture several thousand of them at a moment's notice, though. Do you not have any screen-cap software, Zen? I can get some Go-Go shots later, if you want, although my screen cap and resizing capabilities aren't ideal; Steve's are higher-res than mine.

Go-Go...Yubari? The lethal Kill Bill schoolgirl? I found this shot on Google:

Is it me or does that look like a cg shot?

Picked up Larry Cohen's quirky monster movie Q the Winged Serpent for £5.99 from the newsagents, 5.1 DTS and a commentary, not bad, another film I haven't seen in donkeys years.

Quickie Quiz - What does the 'Q' in Q the Winged Serpent stand for? Anyone? No not 'quirky'.

On the new Sin City DVD, QT claims that he didn't use any CGI in Kill Bill, but that he warmed up to the possibilities after working with Rodriguez on that movie.

Feel free to enter into foreign film goatee-stroking territory here, Zen, I'm all ears. We can post some scantily clad babe shots every now and then to keep Steve distracted while we exchange suggestions.

You can always start a World Cinema thread in the Movies Area Zen, you won't get much input from me, but there are a few others who love this sort of thing, they usually congregate in the Polls area, if you start it they will come.

That shot of Go-Go does look cg'd but it's probably her doll-like face that gives that impression.

Hey thats a great title for a thread, start it and I'll post something in it, maybe Monty Python lyrics or a few screenshots from Pearl Harb'our' one of our crappy newspaper reviewers goofed badly recently talking about Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, saying that 'she' had also directed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, well done! Where do they find these people?

Quetzalcoatl pn Chief god of the ancient Maya, pictured as a feathered serpent, or as an elderly white man with a flowing beard who came up out of the Atlantic in a boat and eventually returned again. See Also: Kukulkan.
The common Quetzal is a sort of Bird-of-Paradise with an exceedingly long tail, and the national symbol of Guatemala, lending its name to their currency unit. Silver one-quetzal coins are quite rare, and prized by the collector for their beauty and unusual size: the Guatemalan government used the same amount of silver as in other countries' generic silver dollars of the time [see: Latin Union], but considerably more copper alloy.
Quetzalcoatlus is the scientific name given to a kind of flying dinosaur discovered in North America; its wingspan was something approaching forty feet, and a full-size model hangs in the Dallas Museum of Natural History.

Kings of the Sun. Mayans vs Toltecs with Apaches thrown in for good measure.
I don't think this film is out on dvd yet, or Taras Bulba which was also directed by J.Lee Thompson and starring Yul Brynner. Still a few oldies not on dvd yet. I'd buy 'em.
