Dante Speaks

Hope this tidbit hasn't already been posted elsewhere on the HTF:

. . . . Finally, [Joe] Dante wanted to produce a new Howling special edition, because he was dissatisfied with the previously available movie-only edition.

"They're doing The Howling as a special edition at my insistence, because I was so annoyed with the transfer of the last DVD. I didn't like it, and I suggested that it might be a good idea to do another transfer. So we did, and it's got a documentary on it that's not bad, plus most of the stuff that was on the old Image laser disc."

The new documentary incorporates old footage from behind the scenes and new interviews from the participants. The commentary will be the same as the one on the laser disc. "I didn't feel that I needed to do another commentary. In fact, Chris Stone, who's on the commentary, has passed away, so it seemed like it would be better to preserve that one."

No street date is set for the new Howling DVD.

dateline: June 12, 2002

Nice, very very nice. I'm glad I didn't get the original edition.

I\'ve seen things you people wouldn\'t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those... moments will be lost in time like ...tears... in rain. Time... to die.\"

Excellent! I wish more director's would get involved with how their movies are presented to the public.

For whatever it's worth, The Howling: Special Edition is listed for "2003" on Davisdvd.com's "coming soon" page (with the usual caveats, of course). The Mondo-Digital Website gives a nonspecific "future date" for the release of this film on its "upcoming releases" page in the "re undated" section, as well.

Let's hope this is a good sign and will fall within MGM's list for its horror offerings later this year.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Dante's always seemed like a movie fan's best friend.

I'd buy this SE just on principle.

Here's some (slight) detail on the bonus materials from the BBFC database:

------------------------------
THE HOWLING BONUS MATERIAL TAPE 3 OF 3

Classified 07 May, 2003. Run Time 79m 28s

00:27:00:21 | NO TITLE ON SCREEN
00:29:19:09 | NO TITLE ON SCREEN
00:23:07:24 | NO TITLE ON SCREEN
------------------------------

Not very helpful I know, but there's a good 80 mins of materials there (the tape 3 of 3 is confusing)

Please note: Momentum Pictures, not MGM will be releasing The Howling in the UK.
