Films (out of four):

Black Hawk Down

Amelie

Artificial Intelligence : The film tackles a lot of themes including evolution, self-preservation and real emotions – its boundaries and limitations, among others. I like the many ambiguities in the film where the viewer is left making their own interpretations. The nature of the film allows for such to happen and that element worked for me. A.I. is not a perfect film by any means and may not even be emotionally gratifying. And that is fine by me. Because what the film achieves instead and does so in a painstaking manner is that it provokes in such a way that no other film has done in quite sometime. It is a film that is to be enjoyed at a metaphysical and analytical level rather than at an emotional one. The movie, in more ways than one, is philosophically enriching. It aims for the intellect instead of the heart. All in all, the filmmakers made this all happen, rather brilliantly from the acting, the script, the production values and the direction. And for a summer commercial fare, that is extremely rare.

What a tremendous achievement for both Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick.

Films:

Monster's Ball

In The Bedroom

Divided We Fall

Mulholland Drive: David Lynch unleashes his latest effort with little fanfare. And much like With A Friend Like Harry, how one interprets Lynch’s underlying narrative will determine one’s enjoyment of this film. The film is a critique of the Hollywood system and David Lynch is able to pull it off quite nicely with the tone, music, mood and camera shots that has now become his signature. With its fragmented narrative, it is one of this year’s most challenging films and will sure polarize audiences. Those who are patient and are willing to put the pieces of the puzzle together will be greatly rewarded. Naomi Watts is outstanding here. A truly remarkable and mesmerizing film.

Together: A battered wife with an alcoholic and abusive husband along with their 14-year old daughter and 10-year old son, a self-proclaimed lesbian, a pushover, a manipulative girlfriend, a gay man, a lonely old man who just wants a friend, a curious 14-year old boy with very conservative parents, a political radical and an unpredictable medical student – a collection of strange and offbeat characters whose lives interact with one another in Lukas Moodysson’s satirical look at communal life in the mid-1970’s.

This is a funny, touching, thought provoking and well-acted film. Director Lukas Moodysson manages to create well-defined characters while juggling a huge ensemble cast. This was a very nice surprise and one of this year’s finest films and with its very frank and open approach towards sex both spoken and in visual images that could very well be this year’s boldest film.

Hedwig And The Angry Inch: This is a punk rock, neo-glam rock musical odyssey. What is very surprising about this film is that underneath all the outrageousness, make-up and over-the-top costumes is a deeply layered human drama about self-discovery, facing adversity and being true to yourself. John Cameron Mitchell gives a very compelling performance as Hedwig that is worthy of an Academy Award nomination. There are very few actors who could have pulled this one off. The musical numbers are filmed with Mitchell actually singing his songs live. The songs by composer/lyricist Stephen Trask are all well conceived and truly rock. The film is definitely not for everyone. I would have preferred it without some of the sexual situations/references contained in the film (even though most of them were only suggestive), but such as it was. The performances and the songs are the true standouts. It also contains some very funny moments.

The Deep End: Scott McGehee and David Siegel as co-writers, co-producers and co-directors are to be commended for revisiting and reworking a conventional storyline and turning it into an unpredictable, suspenseful and evocative thriller. At times, films by new directors are automatically discounted unless they deliver something truly fresh, shocking or a film with a big plot twist. This film manages to be an effective thriller and also about unspoken love. It’s nice to see films that also turn out to be something else. The film grabbed my attention from the very beginning and contains one of the best female performances so far this year, Tilda Swinton. She pretty much carried the entire film and it wouldn’t have worked well without her performance.

The Road Home (China)

With A Friend Like Harry: This film is a great character study about self-doubt and the struggles involved, the lost of individual freedom, the illusions of happiness, and the longing for lost opportunities. The film has been nominated at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and the 2001 British Academy Awards. It has won several categories at the César Awards, the French equivalent of the Oscar Awards, including Best Director and Best Actor for Sergi López. Both López and co-star Laurent Lucas are outstanding in this movie. Lopez playing the very friendly but frightening Harry and Lucas as the quiet and introverted Michel.

Dominik Moll stays away from clear-cut answers especially in explaining Harry’s motivations. And depending on how you interpret the underlying narrative that Moll dishes out with a certain degree of ambiguity, will determine your level of enjoyment of this film. Those looking for a conventional suspense thriller including the use of music or certain shots to create tension may just be disappointed. Certainly those elements are used here by Moll but at a different level. In addition, most of the violence here occurs offscreen and the film has in it some welcome dark humor.

This film is more psychological than suspenseful, more mysterious than thrilling, and more surreal than menacing. It is definitely not what it appears on the surface. These days, it is rare to have a film in this genre released in the summer that at the same time have a totally different and deeper meaning.

Moulin Rouge: The Ziegfeld theater in Manhattan was the perfect setting for this film – a highly energetic film that has its own style and character and certainly demands attention. Ewan McGregor gives a very surprising solid performance from the dramatic to the comedic and musical sides required of his character. He and Nicole Kidman sing all of their songs. The musical numbers are well conceived and blows away any of the uninspired musical sequences featured in that musical wannabe from last year, Dancer In The Dark. While Ms. Kidman may have top billing in this film, this one truly showcases McGregor’s talents.

Set in the early 1900’s, M.R. tells the story of a love triangle between a poor writer (McGregor) and a rich duke (Richard Roxburgh) who compete for the love of a courtesan (Kidman), while all three try and conceive a new stage musical. While the story may not be completely original, it is the journey, artistic interpretation and acting that make M.R. excel from all other musicals in recent memory. Director Baz Luhrmann’s visual style is so original that he transports you to another world and the quick cuts along with the exhilarating camera work definitely hold one’s attention. The summer movie season starts off with a bang. Only this time, the fireworks come from M.R.. What a spectacle. Luhrmann by his imagination and creativity shows how an entire film genre can be revived with much success.

Shrek: Very enjoyable. The jokes towards Disney (and Michael Eisner) were funny and, at times, hilarious. The various parodies on recent films such as The Matrix and Charlie’s Angels work with a high degree of amusement. While I still have to give Toy Story and Toy Story 2 (and Pixar, of course) the overall advantage in all around animation and storyline, this is one very fine effort from the folks over at DreamWorks. A sure crowd pleaser.

Amores Perros (Love's A Bitch): A film about people in extraordinary circumstances all yearning for love, redemption and the importance of family. The narrative is told in three different stories that intersect halfway through the film. This is a very fine effort from first time director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu with the film getting a Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination. The acting performances are all very strong, especially that of Gael Garcia Bernal as Octavio, who wants a better life for himself and his sister-in-law. This is also a very difficult film to watch because of the dog fighting sequences featured in its first segment. The disclaimer on animal safety at the beginning of the film certainly helped in getting through some of these brutal scenes. The film is so down to earth stripped of any pretentiousness and manipulation involving true and honest emotions.

Memento: A clever piece of filmmaking as it tells the story of a man who vows to avenge the rape and murder of his wife. The story is told backwards so that the viewer experiences the same dilemma as that of the main protagonist who has short-term memory loss as a result of the incident. Creatively crafted with the use of flashbacks, flashforwards and everything else in between and features one of this year’s best actor performance by Guy Pearce.

Enemy At The Gates: This is a very intriguing, well-acted film with a lot of tension. The canvas that director Jean-Jacques Annaud uses to tell his story has a feeling of authenticity and believability. I also found the love story to be appealing and added another layer of depth to the entire story. Without it, the film is reduced to another cat-and-mouse game and might as well have been another hybrid of one of those early western films. With the love story, some of the characters’ weaknesses and insecurities were intimately explored. The film is quite entertaining and tells a lot about the choices we make in life. This is a very good effort from Jean-Jacques Annaud who also directed Seven Years In Tibet.

The Pledge: A story about one man’s obsession, loneliness, post retirement crisis and descent into madness. Jack Nicholson gives a remarkable performance. It is one of his finest performances in quite sometime, even better than As Good As It Gets. The murder-mystery plot does take a back seat to the more important character study that this film provides.

Films:

Gosford Park

Pearl Harbor

The Man Who Wasn't There

Bread and Tulips (Italy)

The Others

Jurassic Park III: First of all, any movie that has the actor that plays Mr. Noodle on Elmo’s World (Sesame Street) should become suspect. The target audience of this movie are kids ages 7 – 13. What it comes down to is if you have kids in that age bracket, go and take them. They should enjoy it. For others, there is really not much new to see here. Besides, how many times would one want to pay and see actors screaming, looking scared and running away from dinosaurs? Other than one sequence that involves the flying dinosaurs (Pterodactyls), which I thought was well-executed (or maybe I’m giving it too much credit as this is the only part of the film that is close to being original), everything else is recycled here.

As one can tell, the investment here is not on the dialogue (hardly any) or in the acting (extremely lacking). The CGI is good but nothing groundbreaking. This installment lacks suspense and the multi-structured action sequences that worked so well in the previous two movies under the capable hands of Steven Spielberg. If you don’t have kids, I would wait for the video. But if you must see this one, at least be sensible enough to not pay top dollar as you might just be disappointed.

The Claim

Hannibal: The movie suffers from lack of character development and poor storylines. Ridley Scott tries to hide these deficiencies by creating some visual artistry to trick the audience into believing that if they think hard enough, this an elevated and artsy serial killer movie. Sorry, but I didn’t fall for it. Silence Of The Lambs was an intelligent, suspenseful and thrilling crime drama that derived its power and intensity from an incredible screenplay and characterizations. Hannibal is everything SOTL wasn’t.

I'm only going to see those that are noteworthy including the independent and foreign films and the high profiled movies. I value my time and life is too short to waste on movies such as Joe Dirt and Freddie Got Fingered. So my list will be shorter than most of the others here.

Wow...I nearly forgot about this thread . Made a pretty big update. I hope I'm not forgetting anything (and if I am, what does that say about the movie? ).

Added O Brother and then promptly removed it when I noticed that it was not considered a 2001 film.

Saw, loved, and added Moulin Rouge. Makes up for the Complete Waste of Time that was Pearl Harbor. Not sure if I will be catching Atlantis or Tomb Raider next weekend, neither of them look all that appealing.

Current Reviews:
Haiku Tunnel, seen at home on DVD, on 23 Mar 2002.
Weak office-humor-related story about a guy, working as a "temp" (temporary secretary), who is trying to make it through his first week at his new "client." The humor for me was dry at times (mostly when it came from the subject of the whole film), but every now and then there was a good bone or two. His co-workers -- especially Marlina's first couple of appearances -- were far more interesting to watch. A 75% for the effort.

Antitrust, seen at home on DVD, on 26 Mar 2002.
Where I expected an Office Space-style laughfest from Haiku Tunnel and got letdown, here I was expecting a cheap hacker-horror flick where Hollywood loves to indulge in the most extreme of inaccuracies...but walked away mightily surprised at not only how accurate this movie portrayed computer usage (relatively, compared to EVERY other Hollywood flick containing computer jargon/interfaces/whatever), but also that the plot focused more on the suspense aspect of it instead of devolving into the typical teen hack&slash we've come to be familiar with.
Tim Robbins puts in a great performance as a Bill Gates archetype ("Bill...who?" ROFL!) who wants his software megacorporation (whose HQ, coincidentally, is located in the Northwest, and whose operations, also coincidentally, are under investigation by the Justice Department...all coincidentally, of course) to be the center of control for every electronic device on the planet (and who said Hollywood was bereft of creative stories, hmm? ) And to make sure his company's goals are achieved, Bill G--er, Gary Winston--hires the best and the brightest in the land, to help him achieve his goals of a world domin--ah, erm...united. But when his new protoge genius starts becoming inquisitive about how Winston is coming up with all these helpful and brilliantly-written software modules, things start spiraling out of control.
The movie has a few twists that, while they aren't too hard to figure out, they aren't completely straightforward, and throughout, the mystery/thriller aspect of the story is kept in focus, even to the end, where the typical Hollywood cliche "bad guy retribution strike" is avoided. The movie, in my opinion, is not too heavy-handed in its "All Software Corporations Are Greedy and Sinister" outlook; it does set up the little guy -- the basement hacker, so to speak -- as the powerless David who has to try to overcome a villanous Goliath, so it's to be expected that the "Open Source Is Good - Corporate-Backed Is Bad" is played out to its extreme conclusion...but, with a few minor exceptions, the movie does it in a fairly reasonable way, and -- most importantly -- doesn't cheat in the process. The resolution is a little underwhelming, but the viewer still feels satisfied the good guys do win in the end.
Overall, a B-, or 80%.

•  Black Hawk Down, seen at UA Columbia Park Stadiums 12 in North Bergen NJ, 9 Mar 2002.

VERY intense war movie depicting the events in Somolia in late 1993. This is probably the ONLY Bruckheimer-produced film I can say I enjoyed without feeling guilty I was supporting a brainless popcorn flick. Unlike the more recent We Were Soldiers this movie carries little to no trace of sappy sentimentality or heavy-handed PC BS that interfered with WWS and other recent war-movie attempts. Additionally, it hasn't been dumbed down Armageddon-style to the lowest common denominator; I am very impressed with how well Scott kept a tight rein on the direction of this movie.
Acting was outstanding, and it was a treat seeing Ewan McGregor play an American -- he does pretty decent at imitating our accent Same goes for Orlando Bloom -- here he playes *quite* a different role from his Legolas elf in Lord of the Rings, and he shines quite nicely. Other notables include Tom Sizemore -- it was wonderful watching him play the cool, calm, and collected type under heavy fire -- and Josh Hartnett, who'd (excepting O) only been in fluff entertainment before this. Cinematography was beautifully gritty; night scenes were shot with superb detail and the daytime battles captured all the intense, bloody details, and while sometimes the the editing was a little jarring (some Gladiator-esque styled slow-mo/speedup shots) they were very few and far between -- even then they did serve a purpose to the film. The plot was VERY straightforward, and as such the story had little complexity, yet in the hands of Ridley Scott, I was still on the edge of my seat wondering how the whole thing was going to turn out.
Overall this is the best war movie that has come out since Saving Private Ryan. I would put it a notch above We Were Soldiers (whose battle sequences I thought were slightly better), primarily because it kept its focus on the battle and did not let extraneous pieces interfere with the heart of the story. It just barely misses making my top 10, and falls in at #11 at a high 85%. Black Hawk Down deserves the awards it was recommended for, and had the playing field not been so crowded this year, I feel it could deserve to have been nominated for Best Picture as well.
•  Megiddo: The Omega Code 2, seen at home on DVD.
*Shudder* . . .
That 1 word sums up my feelings about watching this movie. Before I get to my comments, I must preface it with this: When I watch a film, I put my political and religious baggage aside and watch it for its intrinsic value and its overall entertainment. That means I can watch stories like The Contender without getting offended by its left-wing preaching, or Jesus of Nazereth despite not being a member of those faiths that view Jesus in the light that is commonly portrayed in such religious movies.
Having said that, I must ask -- no, scream at the top of my lungs in frustration: Why is it that movies like Megiddo always portray religious-themed end-times in such a simplistic, naive, and shallow manner?? The same problem I had with the first part of this "story" (The Omega Code, from 2000) also holds true with this one: We are presented a fantastic story of the rise of power of the Antichrist, and in the end we are given the expected Deus ex Machina, but done without any regard or context as to why or how it happens, without any proper relation to anything in the film before the event. Yes, I'm VERY well-informed on the subject matter; I've read a few "This Is How The Book of Revelations Will Play Out" books, including the one by Hal Lindsay (one of the men interviewed in the Extras section of the DVD), so I know how many modern sects are interpreting the particular texts of Revelation. But come on folks, this isn't the Middle Ages any more, where people will just accept the Word by the mere flash-of-light-in-the-sky; the psyche of humanity has evolved somewhat since then, and Reason should meld with Faith in trying to show one's view of Revelations. If there's to be a Deus Ex Machina moment, how does it happen? Why does it happen in the context of the events being portrayed? These are the problems I've had with movies like Left Behind and The Omega Code (the first one and this one): Without giving reason and context, the entirety of the movie boils down to one long preaching seminar. At least with The Omen we had context, and the end result, while not following the literal word of Revelation, at least was internally consistent. THAT is the key -- internal consistency, something that the three aforementioned stories fail to adhere to, and that is why I give the movie such a low score. In fact, the only things keeping me from rating it lower were a somewhat-decent depiction of the familial relationships between the two brothers, the plausible separatist movement by the US which eventually pitted them against the rest of the world (which brings up yet another unfortunate non-sequiter caused by the movie's poor plot and simplistic view of the world: How the HELL did all the countries of the world just SUDDENLY (as the movie portrayed) abdicate their sovereignty and formed these ten "zones"???), and for some surprisingly big battle sets. Overall, though, this movie gets a "rotten" rating from me, my first 2001 movie in my list to have "earned" it. 40%.
•  Abre Los Ojos (2 Mar 2002), seen at home on DVD.
I purchased this movie on DVD after I saw Vanilla Sky at the theatre last month (Artisan packed this together with Permanent Midnight; I haven't had a chance to see that, but I'd probably not have bought it if I could've found Abre Los Ojos alone).
It was interesting watching the original so shortly after having seen the remake, and as such I was doing a scene-for-scene comparison in my mind, but overall I was able to distinguish this movie from its newer brother and rate it on its own merits. Before I get to that, though, I'd like to comment on some of the differences. The acting in VS was significantly better, in my view, than ALO, but character interaction in ALO was better, despite having (at times) awkward dialogue. Cruz was MUCH better in VS, and I believe that speaking in English forced her to convey her character's intentions moreso through emotion and body gestures, and as such her character's desires with respect to Cruise's Aames seemed more ... genuine ... than that of her character to Eduardo Noriega's César. And yet...the rawness of the filming style in ALO, compared to the sleek-package design given to us in VS, gave a more natural feel to the story, and for its more natural feel, I was able to connect better with it (yes, I know, it could be chalked up to having seen the story once before and being better prepared mentally, but I like to at least believe I'm being objective )
ALO's story itself, being practically identical to VS, is as fascinating as I remembered it in the remake. The music, both prominent and incidental, blended with and assisted the story, and never felt jarring. As mentioned earlier, the dialogue at times was awkward (obtrusively so at one or two moments), but the story is always moving and as such it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the film. The style of direction sort-of felt to me like a vague merging between El Mariachi and What Lies Beneath -- weird, yeah, I know, but then, so was the premise of the film! Cinematography was decent (the rooftop scene at the end had just as much an impact as VS's, primarily due to the style of the shot). Acting was not as strong as VS, but passable, and never obtrusive.
Overall, the film works well, and if I have no trouble recommending Vanilla Sky, then I would eagerly recommend Abre Los Ojos. 85%, one notch above VS.
•  Bridget Jones's Diary (2 Mar 2002), seen at home on DVD.
While I can see what the hoopla is over Zellweger's performance in this, I can't seem to be as excited over the film as a whole as some people have been. The best part of the movie -- learning the quirky nature of the title character and how it assists as well as interferes with the relationships she develops -- is done fairly well, but I feel like the supporting cast performed rather weakly -- Grant, e.g., felt like he was sleepwalking through his role, and while Colin Firth's character was meant to be wooden, I still felt like I was watching a wooden actor...ugh. Mostly, though, I'll have to chalk up the failures in this movie to a subpar script and (in my opinion) a very weak and unsatisfying ending. Additionally, I expected MUCH more to be made over her diary than what actually happened in the movie, and so felt like it was a cheap plot device used to conclude things. Still, the movie did have its moments -- I was laughing my ass off over her "journalism" scenes, for example. Too bad the movie as a whole didn't tickle my fancy as much as the short few bursts of creativity the film did have. And too bad Zellweger's the only one who shines here; like with Denzel Washington in Training Day, it takes much more than an outstanding performance from the lead character to make a film outstanding as well. 75%.

•  Vanilla Sky (17 Feb 2002), seen at UA Columbia Park Stadiums 12 in North Bergen NJ, 16 Feb 2002.
Whoa, what a mind-bender! From the opening sequence in Times Square to the "realization" scene in the prison near the end, this movie had me ensnared in its gripping confusion. The twists and turns were well-laid out, and I had no trouble keeping up with them, but until the last two or three "weird-out" sequences, I couldn't get my mind completely around what was happening. The last of those, though, when Cruise's character David sees a familiar commercial in his prison and suddenly realizes what may be happening -- that was the moment everything clicked in my mind as well. Unfortunately for the movie, though, the explanation sequence was far too blatant, *telling* the audience everything instead of letting it unfold through character realizations -- it felt like a cheap way out. Even with that, though, the sequence played out decently enough to give the movie a satisfying conclusion.
The choice of music by Crowe fit well with the theme -- especially certain "weird-out" sequences -- and for the most part did not detract from its viewing. The acting from Cruise was top-notch, and Lee, Diaz, and Cruz all did an exemplary job (I don't know why people complain so much about Cruz -- here, at least, she does well, even when she's basking in the brilliance that shines from Cruise). Crowe's direction was by and large superb, and I'm a little surprised that he wasn't mentioned more as a possible Oscar nominee (or the film's editing, either).
I'll end this with the note that I've not yet seen the original movie, Abre Los Ojos, but I'll say that if it's better, then that movie is one of the best movies of the year it came out. As it is Vanilla Sky, while not making my Top 10 of 2001, certainly ranks well in my list. I give the movie a solid B; 85%.
•  A Knight's Tale (9 Feb 2002), seen at home on DVD.
Good, clean fun (though not as much as this year's The Count of Monte Cristo). The movie started off with an irritation -- with a sentence fragment in the introduction text -- and that, combined with what I knew about the anachronistic music flavor presented, set me in the wrong frame of mind to objectively critique it.
Yet, as the movie blundered through the rough opening, I was quickly hooked into the story, and I found myself actually enjoying it, and was actually moved by two scenes -- one near the end with the blind Thatcher, and the other, of course, the ending. For that, I give it an 80%, with bonus points for the rather unexpected but quite amusing sequence after the end credits. Definitely a popcorn movie, but highly entertaining nonetheless.
•  Atlantis: The Lost Empire (9 Feb 2002), seen at home on DVD.
I guess I might be in the minority by giving it a rating higher than a C (I give it 80%), but then I am generally a sucker for metaphysical endings like the one given here. I admit, some of it feels like desu ex machina, but I felt it was internally consistent, and I enjoyed the story nonetheless. Too much felt like a ripoff of Indiana Jones, and some things were exaggerated or intentionally overlooked (like, how did they get *planes* down there?) Some things were definitely anachronistic. But the movie did have its charms, and, as I said, I get drawn into stories that revolve around the mystical, especially animated titles (which I guess is why Kaze no tani no Nausicaa is my favorite movie of all-time). The animation, while seemingly too CGI-rendered at times, was always magificent, especially the light-tracing of the runes, and the detail put into the symbols and text was marvelous.
After rethinking my review of Final Fantasy, I raised that movie a couple notches to just above The Pledge, and thus place Atlantis just one notch below Final Fantasy -- both satisfying movies, but recognition that they could've been done better (with FF having the slight edge in quality of storytelling).
•  Startup.com (31 Jan 2002).
It was really weird, seeing a movie not only filmed in the region I live in, but (partly) in the same *building* I worked in, in the same *industry* I work in! When I saw the 55 Broad Street building being shown I almost sputtered my glass of water all over myself -- I shouted to the empty living room, "Hey, I *worked* there!" I wonder now if I ever bumped into Mr. Tuzman or Herman; I was there often enough during whatever time they spent there. Only one other movie I've ever seen I've been lucky enough to get to say that (Runaway Bride was filmed in the town I went to high school) but it was fictional -- they even changed the name of the town -- so I had far less a connection to it than this. Having gone through an environment extremely similar to that of the film's subjects (think of my experience as similar to one of the main characters' employees' point of view), you can say I connected well with the film. Given what they went through, I'm not so sure that's a good thing :-)
But the film stands on its own despite my connections to the world of the company's creators. The documentary takes a fascinating inside look at the process of starting up a company in the realm of dot-com's, and follows its founders faithfully from inception ("I'm gonna, uh, build an Internet company", as Kaliel, the main character, exclaims as he leaves his Goldman Sachs job for good), through the excitement and turmoil of gaining Venture Capital (read: $funding$ to build the business), up to the pinnacle of "Going Live", then to the incredibly swift crash that ensues, and the resolution beyond the confines of what remains from the downfall. It's also a wonderful study of friendship between two high-school buddies as they develop their own paths down this road to Corporate Stardom, and the pains of how that Corporate path interferes with that bonding; at times, too, it is a study of familial ties, and how they relate to the startup business -- how such bonds affect the company just as the company affects the family. At times the ameteurish style of the film tends to interfere with the storytelling, but overall the messages, both the positive and the negative, do come through. My memorable moment of the story (other than seeing my former place of work featured in the film :-) was, after watching the company grow to hundreds of employees and millions of dollars in May of 2000, suddenly turn in a drastically different direction by November: Wow. I work in this field, and I've seen a LOT of quick corporate changes, but this one really had me stunned. The change in cubicle "appearance" in the next-to-last chapter (the one with the "Six Months Later" tag) says everything in the silent panning across the room than anything anybody could have said. I'd describe it more, but don't want to spoil it further than I already have :-) Overall, I'd rate the documentary a solid B, with minor points taken off for interference of film style to the storyline, and the seemingly forced conclusion between the two main characters, so, 80%. Well worth watching, even if you're not even remotely connected to the industry I deal with every day.
•  In the Bedroom (25 Jan 2002).
Hmm...what should I say about this movie? I generally liked it, and most certainly appreciated it, especially the subtleties presented, in the relationships and in how the environment was used sometimes as a metaphor for those relationships. Because those relationships were the essential part of the story, however, I had problems with the latter third of the movie -- far too much emphasis was placed on the boy's parents -- and certainly way too much on the father. I felt Tomei's presense should have been involved somewhere in the resolution; I felt it so much I was waiting almost in breathless anticipation for her to appear in the final moments, but it did not pass. The acting, of course, was outstanding, though Spacek's role was not as phenomenal as Wilkinson's -- I think if I had seen more movies this year, I probably could have come up with an alternate nomination for Spacek for Best Actress. Tomei was, of course, incredible -- she truthfully knows how to evoke the right emotion...and just the right amount of it, too; still, with her supportive role being less apparent here than expected, I feel her acting was much superior in Happy Accidents, where she had a chance to shine brilliantly (and succeeded exceedingly so). Overall, a great movie -- not enough to win Best Picture (in fact, I would daresay that Ghost World had more depth of character and acting than this movie). 85%; I reconsidered my rating of Harry Potter (yet again, ack!) and moved him down two notches to #11, out of my top ten, to make room for this movie.
•  Gosford Park (5 Jan 2002).
The biggest problem I had with this movie was that the director either bashed you over the head with obvious clues (the multitudinous references to poison had me rolling my eyes by the 3rd one), or moved between too-similar-looking characters far too fast before you could develop any feeling for who they were; when Miri (?) makes both her two guesses in the movie -- both times from some apparent insight -- both times I scratched my head and said, "Huh? How'd she just figure that out?" I'll need to see it a second time to figure out exactly what led her to her moments of "Aha!" The slurred and/or quickened speech of too many of the actors also made it difficult to follow, even though the actual guilty party in the movie was still fairly obvious. Other than that, it was magnificent, especially the acting -- Maggie Smith, whom I'm developing somewhat of a strong liking to, was superb; I loved her lines of irony: "What? I don't have a bone of snobbery in me!" had me rolling.

Updated January 1st, 2002 (Swordfish, One Night at McCools, Ghosts of Mars, A Beautiful Mind, and Moulin Rouge)

Hannibal (Director-Ridley Scott) ***1/2
This sequel to "Silence of the Lambs" is not as good as the first but still quite intriging, another great performance by Anthony Hopkins makes this movie. There are a few boring parts in the middle of the film and the ending is quite anti-climactic.

Mummy Returns (Director-Stephen Sommers) **1/2
A lightweight summer movie that doesn't take a moment of rest but is a thrill ride from start to finish. Captures the tongue in cheek feeling of the first movie but is not as good as the original. The movie is not helped by some less than stellar CGI including the Scorpion King at the end.

Shrek (Directors-Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson) ***
Funny movie with excellent animation and good performances from its leads. Funny throughout and with a good ending. Finally a good animated movie from outside the house of mouse!

Pearl Harbor (Director-Michael Bay) **
What a mess. With such a important historical event like Pearl Harbor to play with, why do they end up making this movie? First off the love story is so corny and poorly written that it in no way can be taken seriously. Secondly, why focus on everything else? Did we need to see F.D.R. react to the event, or the Japanese planning the attack? No, and it all comes across as padding to make the movie longer. The only positive of this movie is the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Evolution (Director-Ivan Reitman) **1/2
Very entertaining if not a tad bit similar to "Ghostbuster", but when is copying a movie like that a bad thing? I liked the Duchovney-Jones team, I don't know why Sean William Scott needs to be in it though. Special Effects are very good and definitly a movie I would see again on DVD.

Laura Croft: Tomb Raider (Director- Simon West) **
This is a movie where you seem somewhat interested in it while you are watching it but when you think about it afterward it seems worse. Some scenes are good, but the plot is only there to string all these sequences together and they don't all fit. Angelina Jolie is very good in this movie and I hope if they make a sequel they get a person that can write a better movie around her.

The Fast and the Furious (Director - Rob Cohen) **1/2
Pretty fun and definitly better than I expected. Vin Disel is going to be a major star and is the best part of the movie. On the other hand, Paul Walker talks and acts the same as Keanu Reeves and the movie plays too much music. It gets annoying when every other scene has a song in it. There have been much worse movies this summer.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Director -Steven Spielberg) ****
The most fascinating movie of the year. Imaginative, disturbing and depressing. Haley Joel Osment proves that he isn't a fluke and is an actor with a bright future ahead of him. Jude Law steals the scenes he's in, too. The movies third act, while too explanatory, is fitting for the movie. It's not everyday you can go to the movies and see something that you are still thinking about days later.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (Director - Hironobu Sakaguchi) **
A disappointment. A movie with this much money put into it should have had a better script. Once the initial "WOW" factor wears off, there's nothing to see besides a muddled story and a anticlimactic ending. Still the movie is worth seeing because of it's graphics, but it could have been much better.

Jurassic Park 3 (Director - Joe Johnston) ***
Jurassic Park 3 is a vast improvement over the disappointing "Lost World". It moves very fast and has excellent special effects. Highlights include the attack of Pteradons in a bird cage and a Spinosaur attack on a barge. Great summer entertaiment in a summer that has been lacking.

Planet of the Apes (Director - Tim Burton) ***
Whenever the apes are on screen the movie is really good, but the humans on the other hand are boring. Someone give me a reason why Kris Kristofferson is in this movie? It seems that there was a love triangle in this that was cut. An enjoyable movie, though. It has an ending that makes no sense but is fun in it's own right.

American Pie 2 (Director - J.B. Rogers) ***
After a year of miserable ripoff "sex comedies" finally a funny one comes out. It is a given that you have to see the original to understand this one. One of the few sequels that feels like an extension of the original concept. Everyone plays their part well, and it is very funny in parts.

The Others (Director - Alejandro Amenabar) ***1/2
Finally a scary movie not aimed at the teenage market. A scary movie that is actually scary. This is what the "Haunting" remake fom 99 should have been like. There doesn't need to be CGI to create scares as this movie has a tremendous atmosphere. A must see and one of the years best.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Director - Kevin Smith) ***
Really funny movie. It works best if you had seen the other Kevin Smith movies but it is not necessary. Now Smith can move on after giving these characters a proper sendoff.

Jeepers Creepers (Director - Victor Salva) ***
Starts off great but the characters turn into horror movie characters and do increasingly idiotic things, which had the audiences hoping for their deaths and laughing at them. I liked the monster and it's truck but the movie could have been better.

Memento (Director - Christopher Nolan) ****
Completely awesome story. Completely unlike anything else this year. The twists and turns of the story are even better in the context of the backwards motion of the story. Best movie of the year.

Zoolander (Director - Ben Stiller) ***
Funny in spots, but not as a whole. Some laughs hit while others missed.

Hearts in Atlantis (Director - Scott Hicks) ***
I liked this movie but I thought it should have been better than it is. No big complaints about it but we've seen it all before.

Training Day (Director - Anthony Fuqua) ***1/2
One of the best movies of the year. Denzel Washington gives a tremendous performance. Totally immersive and the two hours fly by. A little let-down near the end with some unbelievable things happening, but it doesn't take away much from the overall movie.

From Hell (Director - The Hughes Brothers) ***
Really good despite the fact that it seems to drag at times.

K-Pax (Director - Ian Softley) ***1/2
Really good movie. Only complaint is that the movie was too long, some scenes could be cut that don't slow things down.

Monsters, Inc (Director - Peter Docter, David Silverman) ***1/2
Very good with great characters and story. Pixar again proves that they are the best part of Disney.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Director - Chris Columbus) ***1/2
Magical and fun. The 2 and a half hours fly by and the movie remains faithful to the book.

Ocean's 11 (Director - Steven Soderbergh) ***1/2
One of the best movies of 2001, fun and fast-paced, and excellently shot. With a sense of style that makes it seem like it was made years ago. Only complaint is that it is a little slow near the beginning, but once the heist begins, it doesn't let up.

Vanilla Sky (Director - Cameron Crowe) ***1/2
(NOTE: I have not seen the original) I thought this was a great movie and well made with great performances from the leads. My problem is the length. I think the movie slowed down in the middle but it got better and better towards the end.

The Majestic (Director - Frank Darabont) ***1/2
Another really good movie. Technically well made and put together well. The problem is the length. I think the story could have been told just as well, and maybe better, with a shorter running time. On the other side, Jim Carrey and Martin Landau give tremendous performances and everyone else fits their roles nicely.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Director - Peter Jackson) ****
Wow. I don't really think I can adequatly express my feelings on this movie since I have just seen it. But my first impression is that it's amazing. It's anything I could have ever hoped for. I cannot wait to see this trilogy continue (and of course the director's cut on DVD).

Moulin Rouge (Director - Baz Luhrmann) ***1/2
Starts off really bizzare, so much so that I was getting ready to hate the rest of the film. But it slowed down and actually showed a great romance between McGregor and Kidman, and what else can be said about the songs? It gives the movie even more of a surreal atmosphere. The tango scene is one of the best sequences of the year.

A Beautiful Mind (Director - Ron Howard) ****
I figured that this would be hokey and overly sentimental, but thankfully it was not. It was actually excellend and it does a very good thing in showing the first part of the movie from Nash's point of view, instead of another person watching him. I can't think of a bad performance in this film. Russel Crowe and Jennifer Connely both deserve nominations for their roles in this.

Ghosts of Mars (Director - John Carpenter) **
What has happened to John Carpenter's career? He has gone from a great horror director to directing things like this. It's highly mediocre, but it has an interesting premise, and would definitly be better if it actually had characters in it. I couldn't remember anyone in this besides Ice Cube and Natasha Henstridge.

One Night at McCool's (Director - Harald Zwart) **1/2
I am in the middle on this one. It is hilarious in some scenes, but in others it seems flat. In the end I gave it two and a half stars because of the YMCA shoot out at the end and the funny things scattered around (Paul Reiser's Character's ending).

Swordfish (Director - Dominic Sena) **
Even for a summer blockbuster, this seems flat. It isn't bad, but I don't think there's much here to make a movie from. It goes by so fast that I could never really find out what the point of the movie was. Travolta's character is interesting, but Jackman seems to be in another movie altogether.
