But in short, it's not a "yes" or "no" answer. Nothing about this film was ever that easy.

Well, I guess that's something!

I just think they need to get the SE out on DVD soon, or we might as well just start asking for it on HD-DVD now!

For ordinary men, it's a burning, fiery furnace.

Interesting answer Charlie. I can only hope it means that even if there's no definite things happening, that something might be slowly shaking loose.

Charlie, thank you, I was going to post that link.

Many of the workprints shown here in the U.S. were 70mm blow-ups. Los Angeles did show 70mm prints, of various cuts.

Audio: from Future Noir(pertaining to the Director's Cut) "[Michael] Arick digitally remixed the film's soundtrack, using both the film's original two-track mag tape dialogue master and four-track magnetic tape M&E(music and effects) master as audio guides."

Maybe some more technical can respond to this. Does this easily give us hopes of a 5.1 remix?

I'm still formulating an answer to that very question in case I need it for the DVD Producers panel at Comic Con on Thursday. Let me keep working on it a few more days.

But in short, it's not a "yes" or "no" answer. Nothing about this film was ever that easy.

Thanks for the reply Charlie. I'm looking forward to the answer, but for now I'll stay optimistic and keep a close eye on this thread...

Yes, a 5.1 could be made from that.

Well, since Mr. Scott's man has weighed in, just letting you know, sir, that even just a re-do of what is currently released on DVD would be enough of a bone to toss my way. I've been revisiting this title a bit in recent months; it's so easy to lose oneself in this marvelously wrought future -- so easy that one is willing to forget about the current disc's "early DVD" look. And the only extra you really need would be the theatrical and television trailers. That's all. Mr. Scott doesn't even need to record a commentary track.

Angelo, I thank you. I'm working to perfect the "screen-grab." That is a great shot of The Band, btw.

As I have found with most of Philip K. Dick's realities, Scott's future has few equals.

Just complete speculation as to what that might mean: work is being done that is intended for a SE DVD release, but they have no idea if that work will ever actually see the light of day. Hence, it's neither yes nor no: if you produce a DVD in the woods and no one is ever able to watch it, does it make a sound?

Now this may not be what's actually going on with Blade Runner, but I've personally seen it happen with films in similar (although nothing is quite similar to BR) limbo, and it's a very sad thing...

You guys should go check out the Rumor Mill at The Digital Bits if you haven't seen today's update already. They are talking about a two-disc version with only the director's cut on it. Sounds like the Ultimate Edition could be dead and buried. Still, this is waaay better than nothing...

Blade Runner is my all time favorite movie and I will only buy the original version. I've actually held out watching it for over five years, since I sold my Laserdisc player and Criterion Blade Runner but recently I just couldn't wait any longer so I broke down and bought a not so legal copy of the Original Theatrical DVD. I know such things aren't to be discussed here and I won't go any further with specifics but my point is that it is ridiculous that I had to do this. I waited as long as I could to see the proper cut of my all time favorite movie but enough is enough.

Great news from The Digital Bits!

I've read that Ridley Scott wants to put some of Harrison Ford's voice-over back into his real Director's Cut and I think that that would be a very bad choice.

The current "Director's Cut" is the perfect version IMHO and I'm happy that it'll get re-released with a better transfer and some extras.

Here's what they're saying at the Bits:

Here's some good news and bad news all at once. Sources are telling us that Warner is FINALLY at work once again on a Blade Runner: Special Edition. That's the good news. The bad news is that instead of the 3 or 4-disc ultimate edition we all hoped for (featuring all the different versions of the film), the title is now likely to be one of the studio's 2-disc editions, featuring only the recent "director's cut" version of the film (remastered from a new HD transfer), the Channel 4 On the Edge of Blade Runner documentary and perhaps a few other odds and ends. Look for it sometime in the first half of 2005.

Sweeeet! Too bad about no ultimate edition, but a lot of us on this thread were thinking that no re-release was on the horizon at all, in any form. A Warner's 2-disc SE of the director's cut is certainly the next best thing to an every-version-ever mega-edition.

Awesome.

Remember folks, this isn't the last time we'll get to buy this title. Hopefully in the next few years the rights issues will be untangled and maybe we'll get our ultimate set on HD-DVD.

for now, a decent transfer of the current D.C. version works for me...and any extras are a nice bonus.

Oh please have decent 5.1 auido!!!

That isn't 'bad' news at all.

Sure, I hope for a larger set someday, but the most important thing is having the film itself presented in the best possible manner.

It's great that Warner understands the demand for this movie; I'm glad they're doing all they can to get it out in the best version possible.

I hope they don't give up on the rights issues, though; I really want to see the final version. I still have faith that they'll get it worked out eventually, but in the meantime, this will definitely do.

Glad I didn't break down and buy the original dvd. I was recently thinking that I might as well just buy it since the special edition was going to be so far off but now I'll wait patiently for the 2-disc version next year

I think this is wonderful news.

Zen, thanks for the complement on the photo of the Band. I wish I could take all of the credit for it.

I agree with your and Jack's comments vis-a-vis the "world" of BR. My brother teaches directing and film theory, and his favorite film is Brazil: we frequently debate which of the two visions, Scott's/Furst's or Gilliam's, is the more intriguing. Simple answer: neither and both.

Scott was fond of the VO at the end that appeared in some of the workprints. I wouldn't mind that. Oh who am I kidding........

This is wonderful news. Although a tinge bittersweet, it's enough to retire many of my signature links. I have some space for rent. My word! I can't contain myself +deep breath+ ....

This is fantastic news!! Despite this forthcoming release not being an "ultimate" edition I am overjoyed by this news nonetheless! Woohoo! FINALLY!

Like David says, maybe we will get the 'big' set on HD-DVD. This one will make me more than happy enough in the interim. Can't wait to see how much the video is improved, though I don't think the old one is too terrible.

Now that the cat's out of the bag, perhaps Charlie will chime in and give some juicy details! Pretty please?

Also, thanks are in order to Warners for providing us fans with an improved "interim" version while we wait for circumstances to change re the rights issues for the true SE.

Thanks WB!

I read an interview in Empire magazine with Scott, where he claimed he had just recorded a commentary track for Bladerunner. If there wasn't a finished version of the film at hand, what did he record it to?

Does anyone know more about this?

Thanks,
