Sigh, I had a VHS copy of the theatrical version -- got it cheap in London, just 5 quid -- which I loaned to someone, but it's never come back and I have no idea to whom I loaned it so I can't chase it down. I hate when that happens. So with DVDs I now make little post-it notes on my cabinet to remind me.

Have the VO theatrical, one VHS with the original white box cover. One PAL version of the International Cut, (one crappy conversion of that). No workprint though, which I was looking forward to on the SE.

The original film with VO and so-called 'happy ending' are forever etched into my brain, from many theater visits and Criterion viewings.

Watching the phoned-in 'DC' just isnt quite the same.

Many great films have come about through conflict and compromise.
IMHO this is one of them.

I haven't watched the videotape since I got it about 7 years ago. I know that it had Harrisons original narration after Batty dies...and different music. Maybe some different angles. Nothing monumentally different...but still...this is the version that spawned the Directors Cut.
Maybe I'll have to put it on DVD. Hmff...

Right. I guess I'd have to read the other 9 pages in this post or many others...but, wasn't there a region somewhere in the world that got the full first movie released on DVD with the narration? Anamorphic? Or is that not true?

Going from projector to flatscreen for a while.... :p

I guarantee there is only one officially released DVD and that is the Director's Cut. No matter how the box is labelled (and some even say Special Edition), the DVD itself is always the same and that applies around the world.

There is a laserdisc release of the original international theatrical release though. If the vendor can honestly say they have transferred this onto DVD, then you can take your chances with that. Video releases before the DC are also the International Cut. (Though we are talking mere seconds of difference from the Original US theatrical release, none of which impact the story.)

The Blade Runner Special Edition .... (no, it pains me to much to even talk about its current non-release...)

Just an FYI...

A "bootleg" company with a very large website is now selling copies of the international cut on DVD for about $13 I believe so there are copies out there. Beware or proceed with caution. It'll probably be the best way to view the original cut but...

Also, I know people in the newsgroup are putting together their own "bonus disc" for BR. They're trying to get the "on the edge" documentary, still/artwork gallery, and some trailers and stuff together. I say Bravo...if WB can't do it. I'll be happy to contribute the rare stuff I have.

I'm surprised the petition's author has not posted this here. The Blade Runner SE online petition is available through a link in my signature.

I'm a bit displeased with the grammatical errors. Also the tone is a bit abrasive (HATE THE USE OF CAPS) but many of the signatures have some nice pleas.

I just replayed Blade Runner the game from Westwood and in the credits of the game Jerry Perenchio was an executive producer. Was his approval needed for the licensing of the Blade Runner copyrights to Westwood? If he was willing to allow the creation of the game how is a DVD release a problem?

Reading through this thread just breaks my heart. BR is easily one of my favorite sci-fi films, and to see a grand DVD release for it scotched because of one man... it's disappointing to say the least.

Judy, I love that game. I loaded it up on my new ALienware and it is just too blocky. Jim, that's all we can do is cross our fingers. I'll side with Robert Crawford's cryptic optimism that he dropped in that other BR thread and say "we may be surprised."

I'm really beginning to dislike Perenchio based on what I've read here. What a petty, LITTLE man. Sad that he's allowing a personal feud stand in the way of a release everyone would love.

I did e-mail brmovie.com to tell them about the rumours in this very thread i.e that there may well be an R2 SE on the horizon, so that may be their news - or even confirmation of that.

It was a while ago that I e-mailed them, though, so who knows ?

I would frankly just like a newly remastered, anamorphic picture along with 5.1 sound of the Director's Cut. Its obvious extras would be far too much of a hassle at this point, so owning the movie in its best quality possible would be the next best thing.

A 5.1 mix on the "director's cut" would mean a remix since it was only mixed in Dolby Stereo, and I doubt Warners would be willing to spend money remixing what would essentially be an interim version of the film.

Quite frankly, I can wait for the proper "uber" edition itself, and satisfy any craving for viewing BLADE RUNNER with my Criterion laserdisc or the original DVD release in the meantime. Remember, the special edition of Ridley Scott's LEGEND was also held up for a few years due to hazy "legal issues" (perhaps Scott needs to hire a new lawyer ;-), but it eventually did surface and didn't dissapoint. I'm sure BLADE RUNNER will eventually get all its problems worked out, too.

If Mr. Perenchio is indeed the only obstacle, does Scott have the resources and motivation to combat this financial giant? From the outside, it appears neither of these attributes would make much of a difference.

Perenchio, still no comment, tiny pickets at Univision continue. Still nothing concrete, as we try and avoid the speculative here in this thread.

Let's try and remain positive...

They remix audio for much "lesser" films. As long as they have stems available for BR I would imaging they'd use them for a 5.1 mix even for an "interim" DVD.

Heck...they released Shawshank Redemption all restored A/V on DVD only to release it again with SE content not too long after. Maybe we could get a similar dual-release with BR?

I'm pretty sure "Blade Runner" was released in 70mm in certain theatres, so there should already be an existing six-channel mix out there.

Don't tug on that, you never know what it might be attached to...

I may be remembering incorrectly, but according to the great book FUTURE NOIR, BLADE RUNNER only had a couple of 70mm showings in Europe, and oddly the preview version of the workprint was also 70mm (it was the discovery of a 70mm print of the workprint in a film vault that led to the creation of the 1992 "director's cut"). There were no 70mm prints of the U.S. theatrical version or the 1992 "director's cut". So, the only version of BLADE RUNNER that *MIGHT* have a 5-channel discrete mix stored away is the 1982 "international cut", and I suppose the temp mix on that 70mm "workprint", although I doubt any stems were saved from that workprint mix, they'd have to get the sound off of the print itself.

I'm fairly certain "Blade Runner" was presented in 70mm when I saw it at the Mann Hollywood on opening day. I also seem to remember the advertising included a 70mm logo in a Blade Runner-esque font.

I think I also saw it in 70mm at the Pacific Hastings in Pasadena about a week or so later. (Or I might be imagining that since the screen was so incredibly huge at the old Hastings, before multiplexing chopped that theater up.)

I'm still formulating an answer to that very question in case I need it for the DVD Producers panel at Comic Con on Thursday. Let me keep working on it a few more days.

But in short, it's not a "yes" or "no" answer. Nothing about this film was ever that easy.
