Twin Peaks Pilot DVD....yuck!

Greg, OK.

Well, it is has been argued and I am willing to concede that this is not the worst-looking or sounding dvd. It may not even be one of the 50 worst. So, if you compare this disc to the worst looking-ones out there, you will get a very different opinion about the quality of the presentation than if you compare it to better-looking discs. Thus, my relativity comment. Nonetheless, considering the broad spectrum of quality of dvds released to date, this one falls towards the bottom end. I really don't think anyone is trying to say that it doesn't, thus my other comment that you pulled out of context.

Folks, let's keep it civil, and if there's nothing more to discuss, let's just drop the relativistic hyperbole of the quality of the DVD in question. Thanks.

You haven't seen a bad DVD transfer until you've seen the original Highlander DVD.

Ok, I gots me a few questions, if y'all don't mind.

I never saw the pilot nor the rest of the series when it was running originally. I found out about the Bravo Re-run only after it was about halfway through. I am a David Lynch fan, and not just because of my last name, and I am very interested in watching this series. And it finally seems feasable.

So my question is this: when I get ready to rent and/or buy the pilot, what do I need to look for? Of course I would like to avoid the European cut like an angry ex-girlfriend. Is there any indication on the box that I need to look for? I planned on renting first, buying later (if I like), but I figured renting the pilot would be a little difficult in my town since it is an import. I just don't want to accidentally rent the European cut, because I have a fear that it will absolutely spoil the rest of the series.

That being said, I would be interested in seeing the European cut after I have made my way through the entire series and Fire Walk With Me.

Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

The European cut doesn't exist on DVD. So if you rent or buy the pilot on DVD, you're safe.

I just watched the Twin Peaks pilot last night, and thought the quality was fine. The surround mix was actually pretty aggressive in parts, and I'm not sure if I like that or not, but I can't complain about the sound. I think that yellow/brown filters were apparently used for at least portions of the pilot episode and may have made the disc look "off", as if it had been poorly mastered. But altogether, I was very satisfied, and now plan to watch all of the Season One discs.

I just saw this last night. A friend of mine bought it. I thought the picture was quite good, but that might be because I'd worried this was a bootleg. I'd expected to see something transferred from a laserdisc, but obviously it's much better than that. It's fairly good -- certainly not reference quality, but not awful by any means.

I noticed no audio synch problems, which my friend had notice on his cheapo player, but he has synch problems with other discs on that player, too. I'm thinking about buying it myself.

Have you watched the Season 1 Box Set? I only ask, because compared the that the Pilot looks awful. Granted, it's not as bad as other DVDs I've seen...but comparitivly it really sucks.

In Heaven, everything is fine.

I was wondering, was the show supposed to be so orange? It looked pretty orange in a number of places. And the audio sounds a little off as well. Republic pictures obviously didn't have first-generation copies to work with. This was probably made from a broadcast copy or something. It's better than VHS, but looks about what I'd expect with a good OTA signal.

I bought the box set and the pilot knowing about the relative quality between the two. I watched them with a friend who had never seen the series before. While watching the pilot I had to tell him, "don't worry, the rest of the show looks much better."

What's really painful is watching the pilot recap in the first episode. The same scenes from the pilot look so great here, yet so awful on the DVD.

And yes, I know VHS copies look worse. So what? That's like allowing for poorly mastered CDs because the 8 track sounded bad.
