OK, I can't wait any longer. [/url]
(and adapted by yours truly)

Q: What is the 2011 Film List? A: The 2011 Film List thread is mainly for discussing, reviewing and tracking 2011 films. The "Track the films you watch" thread is a great place to keep track of all films watched in a year, though any are welcome to track all their film watching here if they so desire.

This is also a great place to discuss smaller release, independent and foreign films that probably won't get a dedicated review and discussion thread.

And this thread is useful for keeping track of what 2011 films you watched when you're compiling an end of year list or a top ten next December.

Q: Is there any easy way to find my list or someone else's? A: I'm going to try to keep an index of everyone's list at the end of this post, so you can click on a name and get to their post instantly. This helped make the 2009 and 2010 Lists a little more active than some previous years. If I [meaning Adam!] miss your list, just PM and I'll be sure to add a link.
Q: Are there any rules? A: At the top of your list, state the criteria you are using for updates. Some common criteria are:

  • Films released in North American theaters in 2011.
  • Films in wide release in 2011.
  • Films seen in a movie theater in 2011 regardless of original release date
  • Films seen in a movie theater in 2011 and DVDs of films released in North American theaters in 2011.
Every time you update your list, try to reply to the thread with a short comment related to your updates. This will keep the thread on the first page, and hopefully get some discussion going.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to improve the list, please feel free to share them [with Adam]!

I'm sticking with prior practice and simply listing the films I see in 2011. I don't care that a few of the early January viewings will be of films released in 2010, especially since some of what I saw in in late 2010 will be 2011 releases for many others (like Blue Valentine).

If I'm particularly impressed by something, for one reason or another, I'll put a red asterisk by it, but the absence of one doesn't mean I think a film is bad.

In-theater viewings only:

Added The King's Speech, which I saw primarily to use a free Regal promotional ticket before it expired on Thursday. I'm so glad I did. I pictured The Queen meets My Fair Lady, a high concept pitch that sums up the primary dynamic but fails to capture the film's tone or purpose. This is a movie about responsibility. Prince Edward was groomed from birth to be king and had the suave sophistication and confidence to match the desired image. Prince Albert was groomed from birth to attend minor functions and take a low-key role in the British aristocracy after his brother's ascension to the throne. He lacked confidence and desire, and his stutter made him utterly unequipped to be in the public eye. And yet Albert was undeniably the better man to be king. Over the course of the film, we are convinced of that fact. We root for his success not just because we've invested in his effort---though we have. We root for his success because his success is required to rally an empire against an unspeakable evil. Edward would have been capable, but he was not interested, or at least not interested enough. But the responsibility that Edward shrugs off with ease falls upon Albert like a stone. We often hear politicians talks self-servingly about the sacrifice of public service, as if they had not begged and pleaded the public to install them in the first place. But becoming the sovereign of the British Empire really is a sacrifice. He dreads it like few people dread anything. But he feels responsible for it. And he endeavors to rise to the burden. How much of what fills in the aforementioned framework is historically accurate, I couldn't tell you. I will say that the film is an credibly confident crowd pleaser from beginning to end, that Helena Bonham Carter steals every scene she's in as the future Queen Mother, and gives perhaps her best performance to date. Finally, that Geoffrey Rush is stupendous as the Australian speech therapist and Colin Firth pulls off the impossible as Prince Albert and King George. I've have heard the famous speech more than once, and Firth captures the pauses and cadences precisely in their entirety over the final minutes of the film. From them, he has built a performance and pattern of speech that gets to the heart of the man he is portraying. You never sense an impersonation. Highly recommended.

This evening I attended a free advance screening of The Adjustment Bureau held for a local news anchor who cameos as himself in the film. Wow, was I surprised. Usually films that get delayed over and over again turn out to be terrible. This one is a marvelous movie, just impossible to market. It takes the central idea from a Philip K. Dick story, that there are shadowy people who manipulate events to ensure predestined outcomes, and expands the scope almost beyond believe. It is a real science fiction story, with no guns or explosions or violence. There are a couple chase scenes, but they are literally chase scenes: with people, on foot. Nobody's life is in danger. The stakes are far more important than that. Matt Damon is phenomenal as the Brooklyn Congressman aiming to be the next U.S. Senator from the great state of New York. The political details achieve absolute verisimilitude; all of the TV stations are real TV stations, none of the phone numbers are 555 phone numbers. The film was shot on location in New York and feels like it. The film explores questions of free will and destiny, and explores them seriously. The choices are never simple. The dance between science fiction and theology is calibrated perfectly, and the mechanics of this universe are elaborate, but clearly defined and justified. It fully acknowledges the faults and failings of the human species, even as it celebrates the human ability to defy limitations. The shadowy figures that compose the Adjustment Bureau omnipresent but neither infallible nor unbeatable. Their advantages are accompanied by weaknesses that more or less balance out; they are not blank faces, but characters every bit as developed as the "normal" characters. In a world that is proven to be preordained, their success at any given task is never preordained. John Slattery is a highlight as Richardson, the adjuster assigned to get Damon's Congressman back onto the Plan. He balances the comedic and the dramatic perfectly with a working man's affability as he is increasingly frustrated by the Congressman's efforts to blaze his own trail. Anthony Mackie is phenomenal as Richardson's predecessor on the case, who is seriously second guessing the assigned task. Terence Stamp is bone-chilling as Richardson's successor, who doesn't chase the Congressman but instead presents him with a cruel ultimatum. Emily Blunt manages the impossible, presenting a love interest who could plausibly induce a man to go to war with destiny itself. This is screenwriter George Nolfi's directorial debut. His only other credits were the subpar screenplay for Timeline, the perfectly mediocre screenplays for Ocean's Twelve and The Sentinel, and the solid screenplay for Bourne Ultimatum. Nothing from any of those movies would have suggested he had a movie like this in him. It's perhaps the most astonishingly confident debut film I've ever seen.

Caught two movies today: Take Me Home Tonight and Drive Angry 3D. The first is a classic two and a half star film; it entertained me throughout, I enjoyed the characters, I felt like it earned my $8 for a matinee, but didn't do anything special enough to be revisited on DVD or Blu-Ray. The second is much harder to classify. It positively excels at achieving what it set out to do. But what it set out to do is never going to be a four star movie.

Added Paul, which is almost but not quite a 2 1/2 star movie. I laughed a lot, but the laughs were often cheap. Seth Rogan's Paul is terrific, but the rest of the movie doesn't live up to him. Lots of gay jokes, lots of foul language jokes, lots of drug humor -- which I'm all for, but the execution here was pretty lazy. I guess at the end of the day, I was looking for more from the film than I got. I don't regret seeing it, but it can probably wait for a rental.

Added Sucker Punch, a film that's almost impossible to assign a star rating for. Visually, the film is one of the most impressive of the year. Storywise, it's a complete mess. The characters aren't developed enough to really invest in them, and the framing device of the film makes interpreting what's supposed to be real incredibly murky. The ending is not satisfying. The dance sequences, which serve as the big fantasy set pieces, are stunning to look at but leave you feeling like you're watching someone else play a video game. Emily Browning's Babydoll is the closest we get to a relatable character, but her samurai fights in her skimpy sailor costume are entirely fetishistic in nature. The overall effect is to turn the audience into exactly the kind of voyeurs it's criticizing.

Added Hanna, a film that could have been a standard action picture if not in the hands of Joe Wright, and if Saoirse Ronan were not embodying the title role. The film is Hanna's story, and there's a lot more to it than the fight scenes. The film's running time is devoted to her discovering the world, and it takes the time and provides the moments so that audience feels that. The entire cast is stellar, further elevating the material. The dialog is pitch perfect, attuned to the different ways different people in different places speak, what that says about them and where they've come from.
