The Movie

Get Him To The Greek is the sequel(of sorts) to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, with Russell Brand reprising his role of debauched rock star Aldous Snow. Jonah Hill also returns from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this time playing rising music executive Aaron Green. Aaron’s boss, Sergio Roma(Sean "P. Diddy" Combs) assigns Aaron the job of getting the rock star transported, without serious harm to himself or others, from his home in London to his comeback concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Various hi-jinks ensue departing from this premise.

Director Nicholas Stoller returns as director, having also directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and has written the screenplay this time as well. Brand and Hill have great screen chemistry here as their characters play off each other; the producers discovered the rapport between the actors during rehearsals for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which undoubtedly played a role in Hill getting the role in this film opposite Russell Brand.

Get Him To The Greek has a number of funny bits, but the whole is less than the sum of its parts here, meaning that the story never quite delivers the kind of hilarity that we might expect from these actors. For all of the laughs in the film, there seem to be missed opportunities in this "road trip" film that could have made it a better film. The result is an average comedy rather than an above average comedy. The unrated edition includes approximately 4 minutes of extra footage integrated back into the film. The extra footage consists primarily of some sight gags from the psychedelic journey taken by Aldous and Aaron.

Video

Get Him To The Greek appears on DVD in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Video image is excellent with only minor compression issues. Brightness and contrast are fine with no apparent black crush. DNR and edge enhancement are employed sparingly. This is a much better than average transfer from film to DVD.

Audio

The English Dolby Digital 5.1 track is more than adequate with no apparent flaws. Dialogue intelligibility is fine with excellent dynamic range. The audio may not be demo material but it does excellent service to the film.

Conclusion

Get Him To The Greek is an amusing comedy with Russell Brand playing the type of character that he plays best. Even with a few missed opportunities for hilarity along the way, this is an entertaining film that is carried primarily by the actors’ performances. The video and audio qualities of these DVDs are excellent, even if the film itself falls a little short of its goals. There is a wealth of special features included in this 2-disc collector’s edition, many of which are as entertaining (or even more entertaining) than the film itself. If you enjoyed Russell Brand’s performance as Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, you will probably enjoy his role here as well, even if this sequel (like most sequel) suffers from the law of diminishing returns.
