Every home video version of Papillon I've seen has been a lackluster and barebones affair and I don't understand why. Is this film some sort of embarassment to the studio? One of the finest films ever made is still only available in a "bargain bin" edition and still no blu-ray. What's up with that?

I'd also love to have this one in BD. However, it has reached an age where a great deal of work might be required to render a fine BD transfer...perhaps that's part of the reason.

Perhaps someone has heard rumors, or information about condition of available material.

Why am I resurrecting this thread?

I am home all week on vacation and trying to

spend as much time in front of my home theater

watching new films and old favorites.

PAPILLON suddenly came to mind.

This is an old favorite. One of those films

I pull off the shelf every few years to savor

again and again. Last time I saw this film
was probably 5 years ago. I plan to watch

it again today.

I hope this will make for an eventual Blu-ray

release. Luis is correct that this is one of

the finest films ever made.
