New Plasma + New Bluray advice

This will be our first Hi-Def TV (and, of course Bluray player).  Because I would like to get good quality, I am planning on buying only the PLasma (Panasonic V10 - 54"), and Bluray (Oppo bd-83 [the new one, anyway]), and adding the sound system later - when I can afford it.....So, questions:

1.   I didn't see much on the Oppo on my first quick look thru the posts on this forum - Is it not as good as the Panasonics or Sonys?

2.   Is there decent free (or reasonably-priced) software for setting up the new set?

3.   Apparently the Pana V10 series does not do SD very well....I have a very good SD digital feed from my supplier, so it can't be that bad, can it?

......Thanks in advance....I'm sure there will be other questions....bill.

Hello Bill,

Welcome to the forum.

The OPPO BD-83 is considered to be a very good player, built like a brick and certainly not inferior to the Panasonics or Sonys. It is, however, also more expensive.
But according to many, it's worth the price difference!

The Oppo BDP-83 is an awesome player. I've heard and read nothing but good about it. Home Theater magazine has labeled it "The Product of the Year." Will you be using it for sacd and dvd-audio playback too?

It includes a calibration disc and 6' HDMI cable (when ordered from their site).
Oppo is supposed to be very good at upscaling dvds, to near HD quality.
I, myself, ordered one earlier this evening................ can't wait!
