SV MTS 5.1 full-size OR...?

I'm in the process of building a Home Theater mostly from scratch.  So far I have or plan to buy the following pieces.

Display: Panasonic Viera TC-P58V10
Sources: Playstation3/Comcast Cable/Wii

So that leaves me needing a receiver, speakers and sub.  My budget is around $5000 total, though that's not a hard limit so a few hundred dollars over is okay.  On hype alone, I've been dreaming about owning an SV sub (and now their MTS 5.1 full-size system) since I was in college.  But now that I'm in the position to buy, I'm curious as to what else is out there in similar price ranges.  I split my time evenly between tv, games and movies and am pretty much looking for the best sound for the money.  I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy/adventure guy, so I want speakers that are best suited for that style of sound.

So I guess the question is, assuming I was going to get the MTS 5.1 system, what are some equivalent systems out there in my price range?  (Or I could get the sub from SV and go 5.0 from somewhere else).

Also, am I doing this backwards, should I pick a receiver with the features I need/want first and then pair a set of speakers to match?

Sorry if this is an overly broad question, but there's so many choices and I trust you guys to point me in the right direction(s).

Speakers/Sub should be your top priority.  A good set of speakers will last you well over a decade.  Receiver technology changes every few years like TVs, so it makes more sense to sink your money into speakers.

Some other brands to consider:

Ascend -- I would look real hard at two pairs of Sierra-1s and a Sierra center in your range.  Then add a PB13-Ultra and an Onkyo 807.
Axiom
B&W
Def Tech
Klipsch
Paradigm

The SVS speakers should be great as well.  I've had their SBS system for a few years now and have been very pleased.  I just wanted to throw out a few more brands to consider.

Thanks.  I've checked out some of the brands (Klipsch/Axiom in particular) but will look into the rest as well.  What in particular makes you recommend Ascend?

I've heard their 340's and just think they are great speakers at a great price.  I have not yet heard the Sierra-1s, but based on my brief experience with the 340s and the reviews and such I have read they seem to be fantastic speakers and would be high on my list if I was looking in that price range.  I think they look great too.

If you're interested in more than one internet-direct brand and you're willing to eat some shipping costs, most of these companies offer a full return period.  Ascend offers 30 days and SVS offers 45 days.  So, if you're willing to eat shipping costs, you could purchase both (or more) and compare them side-by-side in your home.
