Is there such a thing as HDMI only Home Theater Receiver (no RCA inputs)?

It would be the equivalent to an HDMI switch with a surround sound dolby digital HD amplifier built-in (5.1, 7.1, 7.2, etc). Has anyone seen/heard of such a receiver?

No.
Not all sources are HDMI, and some never will be. A lot of people still use their VCRs. There are a few turntables that are HDMI, but aren't for hooking up to the receiver that way. They're for hooking up to the computer, so you can make a cd of your albums. But some people prefer to listen to albums over analog connections, than than listen to cds (me, for one). A lot of people still listen to sacd and dvd-audio discs, over the 5.1 multi-channel analog connections. Component video is rca type analog connections. Most cd players are analog connections, although some have an optical connection. Still not HDMI though.

If there's ever an HDMI only receiver, it's a long ways away, I think. People may embrace new technology when it comes out, but that doesn't mean they'll forget their older tech stuff, or VCRs would have died completely, when dvds came out.

Well you make a decent point, Ed. Many people need home theater systems to connect together many types of video formats and control them in a universal fashion. This is a very important function of the Home Theater Receiver I use on my main Home Theater system (that needs to support multiple video delivery formats).

Yet I'm setting up a secondary Home Theater System that will connected to a PC, PS3, and cable box all with HDMI and possibly s/pdif. Why all digital? First and for most the connections and cables are compact (more so then component). Also, the room I'm setting up the Home Theater in doesn't have good enough acoustics to take advantage of high quality analog audio in the first place.

In the end my fundamental question is how would I setup a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system with a Home Theater setup that is based completely on HDMI and s/pdif? Do I have to a get a Home Theater Receiver with all the RCA connections I don't need?

Yes, because that’s the only kind available.
