The 1st of many questions.......

Hello everyone......

A couple of basic questions here, I hope you can help me out...

I am building a home and was told if I want to prewire for sound I have basically tomorrow to do so!!! I went today to the site and the guys were shooting nails in the roof so I decided I will try in the morning...

The good news is that I have a roll of amerimax 12Ga wire ( Is this Okay?) and a wall plate. The bad news is I lost when it comes to AV "stuff"

Ill be using 5.1 surround so I'm assuming that if I'm using a entertainment center for my TV that I only need to run back speakers. Is this correct? I have kids with Xbox, Wii, DVD, Stereo, etc so I def need need a center to store all of this crap. The entertainment centers I have looked at all have false doors to hide the front speakers.

Is there anything I need to think of before running the two wires. I am also going to run an additional 2 speaker wires out to the back patio where I will have another TV. I figure I can just tune in on the inside receiver and listen outside as long as both TV's are on the same channel. I don't want to keep high end  surround systems outdoors.

Also can anyone recommend a upper middle class surround system? I'm looking for a Cadillac / Lincoln system not BMW or Mercedes..

Thanks!

For in-wall installation CL-2 or CL-3 rated wire/cable is usually needed to satisfy building codes. It's a fire safety issue.

Most people don't recommend installing speakers inside cabinets because the bass can sound bloated or boomy. However, I have my Infinity Beta 20's behind a wall inside a cubby-hole and they sound great. Maybe even better.

It's hard to recommend speakers because we all have our own opinions of what sounds best but I'll give you some of the most often recommended brands.

For in-store purchase look at Polk, Klipsch, JBL, Infinity and Definitive Technology and Paridgm, if you can find them.

For on-line purchase of Internet Direct speakers companies look at AxiomAudio.com, SVSSound.com, TheAudioInsidor.com and OzHomeTheater.com for Swan's, HSU, AscendAcoustics.comElementalDesigns  and AperianAudio.com. SVS, Elemental Designs and HSU are also the best choices for subwoofers. OneCall.com, Vanns.com, NewEgg.com (for Polk), SaturdayAudio.com (PSB) and Ac4l.com are also great sites for HT stuff.

BTW, PartsExpress.com, BlueJeansCables.com and MonoPrice.com are great sites for wires, cables and odds-and-ends.
