There are unquestionably some members -- and a dozen or so are very vocal -- who want the dropdown back. But there are probably others who don't.

Name one, you say? OK -- me. I don't like the dropdown. I've never liked it. I much prefer the "More Forums" menu. I want it to stay. If it goes, I'll complain.

So anyone who may be tempted to speak on behalf of "the members", kindly speak for yourselves and leave it at that. Thanks!

I agree. And I hope that those making design and feature decisions keep this in mind too: that when they try to "speak on behalf of the members" with design ideas, that they keep in mind the 94,000 members who have to live with it, good and bad.

Let's be realistic here, 94,000 members majority of who only pop in here once in a blue moon. As for myself I never use the more forums or the drop down menus I simply hit that big "FORUMS" tab at the top and go on from there.

What's the word on re-implementing the "Search this Forum" tool?

I'm searching HTF and another popular forum for info (Onkyo 607); I was immediately reminded how much easier it is over there with a "Search this Forum" tool.

In fact, I'm asking in this unrelated thread because searching the site on "Search This Forum" gives me results from everywhere; I'll never find the feedback thread where it was discussed as I'm unable to easily limit my search to this thread. (well, yes, I could use the Advanced Search and click five different things, but that's a bother.)

So I won't speak for all the other 93,999 members, but I really liked that tool. :)

Ok, back to my Onkyo 607 info search!

We all have our various grievances. I'm still miffed that we don't have bigger avatars or allowed signature images. I made the mistake of complaining about this to senor Reuben who went into instant "forum defence" mode and told me in essence that beggars can't be choosers.

I believe (in fact, I'm sure I said) that I was giving "strictly a personal" view -- and I don't think you've described it accurately, but never mind. If I'd wanted to give a "forum" defense, I could have just have quoted Rule 20.

That's word play, and it's a poor analogy. Huddler and the owners aren't "speaking" on behalf of the members. They own the forum, pay for the hosting, go out and get the advertising, and do the daily maintenance to keep the place running. Without them, no forum. And before someone zooms in with the facile riposte: "Yeah, but without the members, no forum either!", let's keep things in perspective. HTF is owned and operated by Ron, Parker, Adam and Huddler; if they shut it down tomorrow, who would step in and restart it? Now reverse the situation, and assume that every single person who has registered a vocal complaint in a Feedback thread over the last four months withdraws from HTF permanently. Same result? Hardly.

Of course they're going to try to make the best design decisions they can. What incentive do they have to do anything else? I have nothing but admiration for Ben's professionalism in his continuing open dialogue here with interlocutors who don't always reciprocate in kind.

Let me stress once again that every observation offered here and in my previous post is that of an individual member, nothing more. I have no more say over platform features or design than any of the rest of you. My suggestions go into the same box.

I know it seems that I'm the only one here who's having a problem with the "MORE" button bug...but I continue to have trouble navigating the forum without this functionality.  Tonight, I can't even get any expanded thread list.  Every time I push "MORE", I get a spinning circle that hangs and hangs and hangs.

I have run into this problem fairly often since the redesign of the home page...but tonight it's not working at all.

And I'm still mystified why we can't have both.  I've stopped contributing to any of the requests for feedback when none of it seems to get implemented, but RAF you and myself seemed to come up with some great ideas along those lines a month+ ago and generally it seems to have been rejected as too confusing.  Just as the breadcrumbs on the bottom seems to be too confusing.

I'd never step out and try to speak for anyone but myself, but the lines clearly have been drawn here in that the opinions of the oldest and biggest contributing members don't count a bit when put up against the potential whims of the hit and run google searching social network fiends who are supposed to represent all the new traffic the site is experiencing, and that just makes me angry and sad.

I'm noticing some odd behavior on my home page this morning.  Threads are not getting bumped, properly, to the top of the subscribed thread list--whether posted in by me or someone else.

See below:

I just had to hit my "MORE" button five times in order to find this thread in my list of subscribed threads...even though I had just posted to it less than an hour ago.

I can confirm this behavior. It seems to be connected to "Summary" view. If I uncheck "Summary" view, the new posts suddenly appear at the top of the list. But like many people, I prefer the neatness of "Summary" view and leave it checked as a default.

This is getting demoralizing.

I don't want to post that...but it's how I feel about it.  I can understand that it takes time for changes to be implemented....but why the software continues to "break" after changes have been made and after fix-after-fix-after-fix is beyond me.  But, as I have admitted countless times before, I know nothing about writing code for websites--so it's ALL beyond me.

It's like everyday brings some new problem for the HTF software.  It makes it a real challenge to effectively spend time here.

I wanted to let you know that we released a bunch of bug fixes Monday to improve the quality and performance of the feed, among other things. One side effect is that we're in the midst of updating everyone's summary view so that it reflects updated content in correct chronological order. In order to do this update, however, some serious database crunching has been taking place behind the scenes to alter and refresh this view... unfortunately, it's taking a bit more time to bring everyone up to par... so some people are feeling the lag in their activity feeds in summary view.

I'm sorry for the confusion and inconvenience. When the update is completed, however, we should be in better shape overall. We expect the update to complete within several hours. I know it's disruptive, and again I apologize. We had hoped and expected this update to complete overnight so that it would be seamless this morning. I'll keep you posted on our progress.

So, apparently all of my subscribed threads with new posts are now bumping to the top.

Do you know if the threads that received new posts during this window will also rise to the top?  Or will I have to go find them?  They are still scrambled all over the place.

Nope.  I've still got threads with new posts from this morning that are still buried several pages down on my list.

Just thinking hypothetically:  What if someone added a new post (during that window this morning) on a subscribed thread of mine that was last bumped weeks ago?  I would never know about it.

Mike,
I've learned that your stuff will be updated and bubbled up accordingly... the update has not completed yet. It depends on where you fall in the queue, and I have no way of knowing where that may be.

The issue of duplicate threads on the home page list of subscribed threads has, once again, reared its ugly head.

Do you have a screenshot to share? It would help if I could see the threads you're seeing duplicated... If you're subscribed to Parker, he posted the same post in 5 forums about the contest winners... could it have been that which you saw? They were all titled the same and would appear to be dupes... just a thought.

I don't know how to do a screen capture, but I'm also seeing some duplicates.  For example, I have duplicate listings of the thread titled "The Fugitive:  Season 3 Volume 1"

Hope this helps.

if you're on a pc, use Alt-PrtScn

for a mac use the Apple Key-Shift-4 and just drag your cursor to capture

HOWEVER... we're aware of the bug and tracking it down now. Thanks for the heads up!

We just pushed a fix which should take care of the duplicate content issue.  In the site update yesterday, we included a new template for user profile pages to display the content differently than on other instances of the Activity Stream.  This caused the inconsistency and the duplicate threads.  Keep us posted if you see anything else wonky!  Thanks for the patience.

Here's my screen captures.  These are all from a single look at my home page.  It took five captures to demonstrate the duplicates.  There are several:

Hi Mike.  I subscribed to many of the same threads you are subscribed to and haven't been able to replicate the duplicates since the fix went out.  Would you mind clearing your cache and letting me know if you still see the problem?

Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure what that has-to-do with the issue of duplicates, Benjamin.  If you look at captures 1, 4 & 5, for example, you'll see the thread "A few Words about...It's a Wonderful Life" three different times.  A number of the threads are repeated.

Hi Cristina!  Long time, no talk!

It took me a while to make those captures (I kept getting distracted)...and I didn't see your initial post about a fix.  Now that I check, I see that the problem DOES seem to have been corrected.

You won't be sorry.  Pixar has yet to produce a clunker (although that's certainly up for debate...and usually is debated about every day here on the HTF! ).  And their home video releases are second-to-none!
