Pioneer VSX-1019AH-k GUI issues

I just got a new Pioneer VSX-1019AH-k receiver.  My wife and I set it up this afternoon.  I've got one HDMI cable running from the receiver to the TV, with a variety of HDMI and non-HDMI inputs.  My TV is a relatively late model Samsung LCD Flat Panel.

First off, I can get the HDMI video inputs running fine on the TV.  But, when I try to turn on the GUI menu, the TV switches to a screen that says "not compatible" or something like that.  What am I doing wrong?  Why can't I get the GUI to come on?

Also, my DVD player is a little older, so it is hooked up via component video cables.  If I understand the receiver manual correctly, it sounds like the receiver can upgrade the signal and transmit it to the TV via the HDMI cable.  But, no luck.  When I switch to the DVD input, the TV similarly switches to a screen that says something like "not compatible."

What am I doing wrong?

A lot of times, the OSD (on screen display), what you're calling the GUI, can only be used with s-video or composite (yellow video cable) connection. Try those, to see if they'll work for you.

See page 22 of the owner's manual, for info on the video converter. See the note at bottom of page, to see if it applies to you.
Also see page 67. Make sure the V.CONV is turned "ON".
Also see page 106. Double check all the "Remedies" under the first heading of the Troubleshooting guide there.
See page 109. See under HDMI heading, and see if the remedies pertain to you.
Maybe try a different HDMI cable. You may have gotten hold of a bad one.

Since I'm not familiar with Pioneer receivers, this is all I can tell you. Read the manual very carefully. A wrong setting somewhere can cause all kinds of problems.
Good luck!

Just in case someone else has this problem, here is what happened.

Apparently, there are two types of HDMI signal - a 60 MHz signal and a 25 MHz signal.  While HDMI signals typically come across at 60 MHz, when the receive upgrades analog video or sends out the GUI, it sends it at 25 MHz.  The capacity for a TV to shift between these two types of signals is relatively new (last 18-24 months), and my 2 year old TV does not have it.  So, even though the receiver can upgrade the analog signals to HDMI, it does it in a form that my TV can't read.  Solution:  Plug in a set of composite video cables.
