Just read that Encore Western has aquired the rights to Gunsmoke, Rawhide and Have Gun Will Travel.

Does anyone know if this information means that they are dropping the Warner Bros' westerns Maverick, Bret Maverick and Cheyenne from their lineups??

I really hope not.  Gunsmoke is availalbe on so many other cable outlets and the WB westerns are the main reason that I added Encore Western  to my cable package!!
If these shows are dropped, I will have to end my Encore Western subscription.

Wow!  A dream come true for me!  I'll be adding Encore Westerns to my package so that I can secure all the Gunsmoke, HGWT, and Rawhide episodes I want.  I have some hope CBS/P will pick up HGWT again but I bet it's going to be slow going.  And Rawhide seems dead in the water at the moment so I'll need to complete that series using Encore.  And Gunsmoke is such a long-running show who knows if CBS/P will ever finish that one.  So this looks like a great chance for me.  I'm thrilled!

I'm almost done with all the Cheyenne's and Mavericks. Although, a few more weeks would help fill a few remaining holes. Other then that I'm ready for some new material. As far as Gunsmoke, HGWT, and Rawhide I have all that's been released so far on DVD, so all are welcome. And since we don't know how far these will go on DVD or if they will even continue, this might be a good time to grab them.

Now if they could just bring back the Rifleman, or something could be settled about releasing those to DVD.

Read somewhere that they will start Lawman sometime next summer, and supposedly still have the rights to Wagon Train and Sugarfoot.

I am looking forward to HGWT and Rawhide on Encore Westerns. At least I have some of those sets already, but would like to see the remaining episodes that are not out on DVD. Are they planning to run through all of the Gunsmoke episodes?

Great news, especially about Rawhide! It's great to know that I'll now be able to see the entire series, all uncut, with good prints, and not have to depend on CBS/Paramount anymore.

As far as Gunsmoke goes, Encore Westerns ran the 60 minute BW episodes from 2002-2005. They're now going to run seasons 1-6, so we'll finally get to see seasons 4-6, which up until now have been the show's most obscure years! Very exciting!

Various press releases have Gunsmoke starting again in January 2010. When the other shows will start is more hazy; Have Gun-Will Travel either mid-year or in 2011, and Rawhide in 2011 or 2012.

Bummer if Rawhide gets delayed until 2011 or 2012.

However, I'm glad to hear that Gunsmoke will be seasons 1 through 6. I had never watched it before the DVDs, but have always heard the 1/2 hour format was best. I also think I will prefer the Chester years anyways.

Let me say this:   I don't mind adding Gunsmoke and co. to the rotation as long as it doesn't mean losing the WB western material.

And now that I read that GS will be the first six seasons, have to say I am kinda looking forward to it.

I am a huge Clint Eastwood fan.   I have never watched ( or for that matter even heard of )Rawhide until seeing it on Amazon, is this something worth getting?

The press release says that Encore has acquired the half-hour and hour-long black-and-white episodes.

While I have always known of Rawhide it was something I was never able to find on TV until ordering the seasons on DVD. I come from the same perspective as a long time Eastwood fan so I think it is pretty easy to say you will probably enjoy them.

Note, this is earlier in his career so he is not the lead of the show but plays an important part and provides a very familar face when first viewed. The good news is that Gil Favor, the true lead, played by Eric Fleming does a really good job and there are several other characters that do a good job of rounding out the regulars of the cast.

In the end, while Eastwood is what got me to the show, he is not what keeps me watching or wanting more. It would be a great show even if Eastwood wasn't on it. The fact that he is just makes it better.

It would be nice if Encore Westerns did make some changes.
Like dropping that stupid clown with his historically inaccurate and anal retentive "true west minute."
I've never seen anything or anyone more obnoxious.
There are plenty of bona-fide historians of the west who can do a better job.
An infinitely better job.

Encore still pan & scans widescreen films, giving us sometimes only 50% of the composition.
That doesn't show much respect for the audience or for the filmmakers or for the western.
They should letterbox every feature film shot in widescreen as a rule.
No exceptions.
Encore Westerns is a true dinosaur in this regard.

Richard,

You're right about the 4:3 movie presentations, but Encore Westerns does offer the TV/DVD collector an excellent source of western TV shows.  The Encore outlets have showed some great classic TV shows in strip format for additions to our collections.

As a DirecTV customer, I'd like to see all of the Encore outlets go to High-Def broadcasts,  Hopefully, with the upcoming launch of the new DTV satt D12, we'll get additional bandwidth capacity for more of the movie HD feeds.

Perhaps this news indicates the post-Season 3 episodes of RAWHIDE are (or will be) getting remastered for cable/satellite broadcast, which in the long run, could mean its continuation on DVD down the line... that is to say, the money spent to create new masters of the remainder of the series wouldn't be shouldered soley by DVD sales, so future DVD releases would be relatively cheaper and easier to produce than they would be otherwise... or am I being overly optimistic?

Not at all, Peter.  I think you are spot on with those comments.  It only makes sense that if CBS/Paramount goes to the trouble of remastering the remaining seasons of RAWHIDE so that they look good for Encore Westerns (and most everything that channel airs looks pretty darned good) then it would only stand to reason that they would also offer those episodes on dvd.

I read the news release. Where does it say that they acquired the 1/2 hour and hour Gunsmokes?

The last line of the Gunsmoke paragraph states:

"Encore Westerns has acquired the black & white half-hour and hour episodes."

You must have just missed it.
