HDMI/RGB adapter Question

I have a LG 50PC3D plasma TV with only one HDMI output, of which my directv is hooked up to.  I am interested in hooking an up-converting dvd player with an HDMI cable.  Does anyone know if there is an adapter to hook up an HDMI to an RGB?  If so, is there any loss in the quality of video?

You can get an HDMI switch from Monoprice.  Easier might be to just component video for the DirecTV; there's negligible difference in video quality.

Also, given Blu-ray prices these days, I'd recommend getting one rather than upconverting DVD.  Especially if you already have a DVD player. A cheap upconverting DVD player is unlikely to be any better than just using  a regular DVD and letting your TV do the upconverting.

How much of a difference would Blu-Ray vs upconverting DVD player make with a TV that receives 1080i not 1080p?

I like the idea.  Thanks Stephen!

On Blu-rays, you'll get at least as much improvement as your HD programming vs. regular DVD.  Your DirecTV is an HD model receiver, no?

Blu-ray should use the HDMI, they won't upscale without it.  As Stephen said, there is no copy protection on the DirectTV HD box and most of the programming is 1080i/720p, so component will be just fine.

Yes, the Directv is an HD model. As for now,  I checked out Monoprice and priced out HDMI swiches and also hooked the Directv up to the components.  Both are very good suggestions.  Now, I am shopping for a blu-ray.  Is it still worth buying a blu-ray even if the TV only handles 1080i, or an upscaling (and cheaper) DVD player?
Thank you for your suggestions!

Ryan,

If your TV can handle a 1080 resolution, it's fine to buy a BD-player. It doesn't matter whether those images come to your TV one way (interleaved) or another (progressive). Thus, 1080i is exactly as good as 1080p. Make sure the player can output that.
