Warner Archive Discussion Thread (The Announcements/The Films)

I think the very robust schedule is a robust schedule of films being re-released to DVD and going on Blu-Ray. I bet you the Noir set and Errol Flynn set will be the only classics released on traditional DVD by Warner in 2010. I expect a Harlow set in 2011, and perhaps a 75th anniversary release of Ambersons in 2017.

I may be "myopic" (literally, as it happens), but I can see a wild exaggeration a mile off.

And where are these announcements of pressed Noir and Flynn sets for 2010? I haven't seen them. Just more Archive crap.

And it's great to see James Cagney, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart will all be dumped in the Archive next year. Such obscure artists certainly "wouldn't have supported a regular commercial DVD release". As they haven't over the past decade, in the years when Warner was a company that took pride in itself.

Hmmmm...that Big Bands shorts set  sounds good. I might be getting that.

Corey's most wanted R1 dvds:

Little Darlings (1980), My Cousin Rachel (1952), The Deep Blue Sea (1955), The White Cliffs of Dover (1944), Born to Be Bad (1950), Ivy (1947), Reckless (1935), Springtime in the Rockies (1942), The Barretts of Wimpole Street

I think you're right. A robust finger in the face of all of us myopic film fans who have supported Warner -- until this year.

I think that the future for all pressed DVDs is bleak. I look at the shelves in stores such as HMV here in the UK, and see that Blu-ray is rapidly making phenomenal gains in shelf space. Studios will not want to go to the expense of having to press two formats and DVD as a format will disappear faster than I would have predicted a year ago. Not good news for classic film fans in the short term because it will take some time before the market base for Blu-ray is established sufficiently to enable the less well known classics to be profitable in that format - and that's assuming that even Blu-ray survives for long in the download era.

I'm not sure if this is a WB made to order release or not as I do not know when their ownship of MGM titles ended but amazon has Return to Paradise listed for a December 31st release for made to order DVD-R and listed as MGM.

Remember you can still watch your dvds on a bluray player!  The appeal of your collection will not be lost (from a viewing standpoint).

Good point.  I'm still a Blu-Ray holdout at present for a couple of reasons:

- Format is still relatively new so a lot of catalog titles and TV/DVD shows that I'd wabt to buy aren't available in the format yet.

- Region-Free: I've been waiting for some of my R-Free BR questions to get answered with the newer R-Free BR players.  Plus, the prices on those units are still a little high for me but as always, will drop in time.

"Checkmate King Two Out"   Jeff Willis  "Combat! A Selmur Production"

I'm a 50's - mid-90's TV/DVD Collector. One DVD show since '96: Firefly

The Fugitive/See Hollywood & Die: [Miles] "What, you think I'm crazy?!" [Kimble] "Next question."

There's a great 5 DVDs for $49.95 sale at the Archives, this time featuring the stars of Gone With The Wind. 29 films from the archives that feature GWTW's stars like Clark Gable, Olivia DeHavilland, Leslie Howard and even Hattie MacDaniel are available to choose from. Guess they forgot Ann Rutherford whose THEY ONLY KILL THEIR MASTERS is not part of the collection. Hopefully the sale will be in effect for awhile. Titles are:

Forsaking All Others

Four's A Crowd

Great Garrick

I'm having an issue with the Archive site today. I put the 5 movies in for 49.99 and they go fine. But every time i move to checkout the prices revert to only 25% for a total of 74.99. Ive done this about 5 times with the same result each time. I hate this site. I will try again later. Some really good films in this sale.

By the way the code archive10 worked for 10% off of the bundle. At least till i got to checkout then everything went south.

I tried to order the Big Band Shorts about five times yesterday using two different credit cards but the system would not take my order.  Very aggravating.

Can any WB Archive veterans tell me if original trailers are included on a majority of the titles or only very few?  I can't find this information anywhere, most sites just say the title has no extras, but I'm fairly certain that at least some do include the trailer.  It would be nice if there was not only a master list of titles in the Archive thus far, but also an indication of which ones contain the trailers.

This is something of a selling point for me since very few of my TCM recorded DVD-Rs have the corresponding trailers on them. It's something I would really enjoy having and would make the Archive a little more attractive, especially since WB often filmed specific footage exclusively for the trailer (e.g. THE CRASH, THE BIG SLEEP, etc.).

Trailers on the Archives titles are inconsistent. The Archive titles in my collection that DO include the theatrical trailers are:

The Actress

All Fall Down

All the Brothers Were Valiant

The Citadel

Colorado Territory

Crisis

Distant Trumpet

Dream Wife

Goodbye My Fancy

H.M. Pulham Esquire
Hot Millions

Ice Follies Of 1939

Juke Girl

Lightning Strikes Twice

Made In Paris

Majority Of One

Man Who Loved Cat Dancing

Mannequin

Mating Game

Mike's Murder

Money Trap

Mrs. Parkington

Quentin Durward

Shining Hour

Story Of Three Loves

This Woman Is Dangerous

The Unfaithful

Weekend At The Waldorf

When Ladies Meet

I'm sure others can fill in the gaps.

Just placed an order for the 5 GWTW movies for 49.99 and it checked out fine, with free shipping.  I did not try to use a coupon code with it, though.

I just called the customer service and they told me i should sign in as a guest to buy the bundle and get the correct discount.

The problem is because i signed up for the reward insider which takes 25% off the movies automatically. So when i put the movies in my basket, they give me the 25% discount. But after 5 movies are in the basket   it doesn't go to the 49-95. It stays with just the 25% discount.

This is the first time I've had the reward discount override the sale. Sucks

I guess i'll end up ordering over the phone.

Thank you Thomas, I appreciate the input and will definitely use your information to make a master list, pending other contributions, which I hope will be forthcoming.
