reciever shuts down

just bought a sony HT-SS360 home theatre system on tuesday. so far so good. this morning the reciever turned off. then progressively throughout the day its getting worse. it now shuts down usually every 15-20 minutes. if we turn it off it turns on. if we turn it on it turns off. its plugged into an outlet by itself, only things plugged into it are a magnavox cable box and the blu ray player that came with the system. it shuts down while watching tv and dvds. got on the sony website for tech help and figured out its usless trying to get help from someone who reads a screen for answers.

Usually, when one is shutting down, it turns out to be a single strand of speaker wire, touching something it shouldn't. Retwisting the wires, and connecting them again will usually fix it. But, with it turning itself on, it sounds like there could be a problem inside the receiver. I'd take it back where I got it, and exchange it for another one...........
Good luck.

I think Tony missed the one critical thing, which is that receiver not only turns itself off, but that it also turns itself on.  That is a clear indication to me that it is defective, like Ed said.  I'd take it back and exchange it for another one.

It could be the remote control.  Perhaps remove the batteries and see if the problem persists.

well we got it at compusa.com and we called them last night. lol they didnt want to touch it so now we have to call sony tomorrow. we turned the receiver off for a few hrs last night, turned it on and we were able to watch 3 movies without it turning off. during the 4th movie it started shutting down. does it matter that its plugged into a power conditioner?

ps thanks for all the advise. im lucky if i can hook a video game system up right lol.

From your original post, it sounds like you've had it less than a week. I wouldn't care if CompUSA didn't want to touch it. I'd go there and get in the manager's face about it. A business should take back something that's faulty, and only sold for less than a week! If the manager still doesn't want to take it back, say you're going to the Better Business Bureau, and any other Consumer help organization you can find. Is there a local tv station that has a consumer helper? They will embarrass CompUSA (bad press) so bad, they'll replace it. If you bought it with a Visa credit card, they might can help. I wouldn't let CompUSA get away with it...............
Contact their home office.
Good luck!

well we contacted sony and the only way they will do anything is if we box up the entire damn surround sound system, which came in 4 boxes and ship it back at our expense. needless to say we will no longer be doing business with them.

Remind them of the 30 day guarantee, and get your money back, and go somewhere else.
Report them to the State Attorney General's office, for bad business practices.

In case you need further reinforcement Ed is right.  Now is not the time to be nice about being screwed over by some jerk manager at CompUSA,  who doesn't want to be bothered returning defective goods he sold you  to Sony.    At the very least you should walk out of the store with a new replacement unit or a refund.  The clock is ticking so the longer you wait the more excuses the manager can give you.

I didn't know CompUSA was still in business as they pulled out of Michigan over a year ago.   If direct contact with the manager doesn't work try contacting CompUSA Hq and talk to then about your troubles with the manager.

It's my understanding that CompUSA and Tiger Direct merged, and are going by the name of CompUSA now. The CompUSA in Raleigh closed down awhile back too.

CompUSA went bankrupt a couple years ago and closed all their stores. The company that owned TigerDirect bought up the assets, started back up compusa.com (it's nothing more than a rebranded tigerdirect.com) and reopened a handful of the old CompUSA stores throughout the US.

The TigerDirect parent company also bought up the Circuit City internet assets out of bankruptcy (ie. circuitcity.com). They relaunched that domain as a rebranded tigerdirect.com as well.

The 3 websites may look different, but they are essentially the same thing.

As a computer builder, I'm a fan of the CompUSA retail stores. Not so much the online presence.
