Is this size too small?  If not, what should I focus on to make the best of such a small space?

No room is too small.  I have a plan to install an LCD TV and full surround sound system in the potty room of the master bath.  It's only 3'x5'.  My wife thinks I'm nuts and keeps vetoing the idea.

Plan it out.  Draw it out on paper or use a similar floorplan program to make sure things fit.

There is a section for theater rooms and major projects below this section.

Perhaps if she understood the "brown note" theory she would agree.

I know.  I know.  That joke really stinks.

I knew the jokes would follow.  But this was a real idea that I tried to get started on.

Hey, I think the potty room thing is a great idea... about 20 years ago I was at a week-long training class for work, and I happened to stay in a hotel room that featured a 9" TV on a wall-mounted swivel arm right next to the porcelein convenience,  just swing it out right in front of you and enjoy 20+ channels of cable TV... that became my favorite spot in the entire room in the evenings, enjoyed it multiple times during my stay... especially after eating all those big fancy dinners on the company allowance, heheh...!

Is there a rule of thumb to use for the room size aspect ratio?

Are you talking about the ratio of the walls to each other?  If yes, then the perfect room size would be based on the Golden Ratio.  But very few of us have that luxury.  Just be careful and make sure that no wall is divisible by another wall.  For example, don't have a 16x8 room because 16 is evenly divisible by 8.  That causes problems with room modes in the lower frequencies.

Robert is referring to the "Sepmeyer Golden Room Ratios."   There is an explanation and spiffy calculator here:

Cool site.  Bookmarked.

There was nothing I could do about the room.  I was just lucky to have my own space for a theater.  I based my seating off of the screen size.  I'm not sure which site I used but the distance is based on the screen width and a 30 degree field of vision (or something like this).  So based on a 103" diagonal screen, I am sitting 12' 6" from the screen.  And that is eyeball distance.  My wife sat down and I measured from her eye (or as close as she would hold the tape measure) to the screen.  I adjusted from there.

I chose a 103" screen because that is as large as I could go with fabric from Hancock Fabrics using the frame that I built.  I maybe could have squeezed and inch or 2 more but I wanted a good stretch on the screen and solid stapling on the back of the frame.
