Setup for VCR & Tape Deck - Sony STR-DH700/DH800

I'm a newbie to this stuff .  Being on a budget, I just ordered a Sony STR-DH800 and am wondering how I would set up my old equipment (the manual doesn't help much).  My TV only has component and RCA inputs.

In addition to Satellite, DVD, & Wii (all component outs), I have a CD player, tape deck and VCR to hook up.  There are no inputs dedicated to a tape deck or VCR.  This is what I was thinking of doing

  • CD player --> TV-in (audio only of course)
  • Tape deck <--> CD-R in/out
  • VCR <--> Video 1 in/out

Would that work?  In addition to connecting the component out to the TV, would I also need to connect the Video Monitor (RCA) for the VCR?

Thanks

That Sony has a decent number of inputs, so you shouldn't have any problems.

You don't mention what all the source connections are, but some must have HDMI; use that if possible.  (Unless the Sony doesn't send the HDMI video signal out through the component; I didn't check the manual, but if this is true then you're stuck with just using the other two.  But you still have 7 component+composite, and you only need 2 component, so you are still okay.)

In general, connection choice should be (1) HDMI, (2) component, and then (3) composite.

Connect the tape deck to either the component or composite connection (component preferably), and the matched RCA input.

Connect the CD to the Sony through one of the other RCA inputs.  (Why would you connect this to the TV?)

And yes, it can't hurt to connect the  VCR to the TV directly using a composite connection.  Sometimes that's the only way to get set-up information.  Whether it's necessary really depends on your VCR, but doing it doesn't hurt anything.

Yes it will work. The receiver doesn't do format conversion from composite -> component (nor the other way), so whatever format you have connected to the receiver, you also have to connect the corresponding video type to the TV. So you do have to connect the composite video monitor out for the VCR.  Alternately you could just run the VCR video out directly to the TV.

Since there's only one source (satellite) to record from, I wouldn't hook up the VCR's "in" side, just hook the satellite AV out directly into the VCR's inputs.  Personally I think VCRs are obsolete, recommend getting an HD satellite DVR if you don't have one already.
