I'm hoping someone can advise me on how to isolate a problem with my (recently inherited) Technics system. I want to fix this system so that I can play my small collection of vinyl, casettes and CDs while I work. Money is not available in large amounts, so I would rather fix this one than try to get a newer system.
My mother believes that the amplifier is the problem, because when the system is turned on, it emits a hum and nothing else. She says the problem did not develop over time and was not intermittent; one day it worked and the next day she just got the hum.
I found a comment from another member in the 2002 archive that might be pertinent. I have no knowledge of electronics and no real familiarity with this type of equipment, so this is just a guess.
"I don't want to wreck my amp by using the cables. I have an old Technics Su-V95 right now"
Although this person was not speaking of the same speaker wire that I have, his comment caused me to suspect that the longer speaker wire (replaced the original wire) that she used may have been a problem for the amplifier.
I have also read several comments about the fact that these amps run hot, so I suspect that heat may have been a problem as well. The system was stacked fairly tightly in the cabinet that came as part of the package.
Any suggestions on the following would be much appreciated:
* how to go about figuring out if the amp is the cause of the hum
* reputable persons or businesses where I might find quality repair services or another amp of the same kind
* how to prevent further damage of any repairs or replacement equipment
Thank you for taking the time to read and help!
