ESPN's Bill Williamson has some interesting speculation on "what might have been" in the AFC West:
Quote:
The last time San Diego visited Kansas City, the AFC West dominoes began to fall. It all started when the Chiefs couldn’t hold on to an onside-kick attempt late in the game. It would have sealed the win for the Chiefs. Instead, San Diego completed an unlikely Week 15 comeback. Had the Chiefs held on for the win, Denver would have clinched the division. Had that happened, Mike Shanahan wouldn’t have been fired. Jay Cutler wouldn’t have been traded. Josh McDaniels likely would have been the choice in Kansas City by new general manager Scott Pioli. Norv Turner likely would have been fired and the Chargers would be starting over instead of the Broncos. It’s truly amazing what kind of impact one bounce of the ball can have on a division.

The NFL's also-rans sure stood out today:

Indy 42  Rams 6
Green Bay 31  Cleveland 3
San Diego 37  KC 7
New England 35  Tampa 7
Jets 38  Oakland 0

It sure doesn't bode well for Washington playing tomorrow night against Philly. Can they keep the score within 4 TD's? Luckily, the Lions had the week off.

There sure are a lot of terrible teams this year.

Didn't the Eagles just get beat by the Raiders? Seems like tonight's game is more a battle of two "also-rans".

I'm really curious about the Broncos - Ravens game next week.  This game is huge for Baltimore.  The Ravens really need this conference win so they don't fall further behind.  Cincinnati seems to be for real this year -- I never expected the whooping they put on the Bears.

Over a week later, and I still cannot believe Philly lost to the Raiders. I expect the Eagles to be pissed after that lackluster effort last week, and just pummel a Redskins team that is playing under a lame duck coach and mailing in the rest of the season.

Cincy does look for real, but the Bears defense certainly is a shadow of its former self, too. Does anyone remember when Chicago and Tampa Bay had the two most feared defenses in the league? Now, neither team seems capable of stopping anyone.

I believe the Eagles will have their way with the Redskins tonight, unless Joe Gibbs accepts the offer to coach again, in which case, the score could be a tad closer. :)

I am fairly convinced that even if the Broncos win the Super Bowl this year, that it will not be legitimate.  I already have the asterisk waiting. ;)

Not to mention the not-so-brilliant effort by their supposed "elite quarterback".

I wonder why New England is playing the Colts for the third year in a row away from home?  One would think those who schedule might consider alternating, if possible.  Three years in a row, at Indy.  Very odd.

Yeah, some members of the Baltimore Colts are still saying that about Super Bowl III.  I love that champions in the NFL are decided on the field, with none of the bullshit that goes on in the college game.  What asterisk are you gonna dream up?

Robert,

And Super Bowl III became even more 'legitimized' after the Chiefs and Colts won Super Bowls IV and V, respectively. Just think what it would have been like had the Cowboys not won VI -- there would have been around nine straight AFC champions. ;)

BTW, I watched III, and remember some of the Namath-led hype that preceded it -- and it was a joy to watch it all unfold.

I don't know which asterisk, but I'll think of one. Hmmm. Maybe I can use the throwback uniforms worn by Denver a few weeks ago as the asterisk.

Keep in mind that five of those early "AFC" Super Bowl wins were really by "NFL" teams  -- Baltimore (1) and Pittsburgh (4).  They, along with the Browns, were moved to the new AFC in order to balance the number of teams when the NFL and AFL merged.

The Lions meet the Rams this Sunday in what is most likely the worst matchup in NFL history. Detroit is 1-22 over their past 23 games, while the Rams have lost 17 straight. If you only count since the Rams last won a game, the two teams are a combined 1-33 over the past 17 weeks of regular season play!

So, who wants to buy a ticket to this game?

Scott,

Perhaps.  There was also the 'Stupid Bowl' between the Patriots and Colts many years ago.  In that game, the team that 'won' (i.e., actually scored more points) was deemed the loser due to draft possibilities.  (This was the title given to that game by the local papers.  I don't know if it made the national headlines.)

Way to go, Lions! Just when you thought the team could give up the title as the league's worst team, they pull together for a total team effort and lose to the previously 0-17 Rams. Luckily, the game was blacked out, so Detroit fans were not subjected to this crapfest. Since the local affiliate was showing the Browns - Bears game at 1pm (another horrible matchup), I decided to do yard work and then watch a DVD instead.

If you know a Packers fan, give him/her a hug today.

Well, I saw the Lions - Rams game almost in its entirety.  It was ugly, for sure.  Both teams looked equally inept for most of the day, although Stafford showed some promise a few times.  I really thought the Lions were going to put together a two-game winning streak this week and next.

About the only good news for me NFL-wise this week was that the Broncos and Giants both lost -- oh, and the Jets.  I couldn't decide which team to root for in the Dolphins - Jets game, but then I realized that the Jets needed another division loss, so I went with Miami in that one.

Luckily, no, I haven't. However, 1-23 over the past 24 games still makes the Lions "King of the Crap Pile", IMO. Now, if the Bucs somehow manage to go 0-16, then they could be "co-King".

Wow, you actually watched the Lions - Rams game, Scott? I think I would have rather had my spleen removed with a spoon.

As bad as Seattle is, I do not see the Lions beating the Seahens on the road. It seems like forever since Detroit last won a road game (you have to go back at least to some time in 2007 -- I do not feel like looking it up).

With the Giants struggling, Philly being a Jeckel & Hyde team, the Cowboys not being that good, and the Cardinals getting back to their mediocre ways, right now it looks like the NFC may come down to just New Orleans and Minnesota. The 49ers are an interesting team, but I think they are at least a year (and a QB) away from being a serious contender. We should get an idea if the Falcons can still be taken seriously after tonight's game against the Saints.

It's currently 17-0, Detroit over Seattle, at the end of the first quarter.  "You cannot stop the Lions on the road, you can only hope to contain them." ;)

I really wanted the Colts to lose.  The Texans played them very well.  That's a couple of games that Indy maybe should not have won this year.  But, great teams often do find ways to win.

The Saints are trailing 17-3 to the Panthers.  And the Ravens' woes continue.  After an excellent showing against Denver, they stalled against the Bengals.  Cincinnati is looking really solid this year.  They're a miracle play away from 7-1.  I picked the Ravens to make the playoffs before the season began (as a 'dark horse'), but now I'm not so sure they will advance.  Hmmm.

The Bucs get their first win (over Green Bay).  They must feel quite good about that.  And the Patriots took care of business against the Dolphins.  Miami still has the division advantage, but that may not matter if they lose a couple more games.  They best they can now hope for is a record identical to last season's, and I don't see that happening given the schedule they have remaining.

Seems like most of last year's playoff teams are struggling, with a few exceptions.

Congrats to the Creamsicle Bucs for their first win on the season.

I'm sure Philip Rivers savors every win over the Giants.

The Colts proved they could go no-huddle for 2 quarters.

Too bad an NFL game is not just 15 minutes long. I had faith that the Lions would pull out the loss, not matter how insurmountable the lead looked. They are money on the road. It's been more than two years since they last won away from home, where they have won a whopping two games in that span!

Break up the Bengals!

Scott,

It's uncanny how much this year's Lions team is looking like some of the Patriots teams from the 1970s.  A few more 2-12 and 3-11 (or rather, 2-14 and 1-15 to keep current) seasons, and they'll be there.  There was a time when everything that could possibly go wrong to the Patriots in any given game did go wrong.  Watching the recent Lions teams brings back some of those memories.

I have to get back to the game to root the Eagles on over the Cowboys.

Shout out to Johnny Angel:

Congratulations on a fine win today in New York!  Coughlin looked apoplectic on the sidelines. :)

The damage that Matt Millen caused to this team cannot be overstated. I think they were much worse off than an expansion team when he finally left, since they were saddled with a lot of big contracts of non-NFL talent.  It would take an excellent GM 2-3 years to get this team back to even being competitive, and we do not know yet if Martin Mayhew is such a GM. His background -- understudy to Millen -- should make every Lions fans skeptical until Mayhew proves himself otherwise, though.

I know the Pats used to be quite bad, but I know little of their ownership during those years, so it's tough for me to make comparisons. In Detroit's case, though, everything goes back to a clueless owner who consistently makes bad hires and then leaves those people in place for far too long -- then the cycle repeats itself. This has been going on for half a century.

This time, after arguably the worst 8 year stretch in NFL history, culminating in the worst single season in league history, any decent owner would have cleaned house. Instead, Ford simply promoted three people who had been with the team through this entire debacle to the top three positions in the organization -- all without even giving the slightest thought to looking outside the organization for new blood.

Clearly, Ford either doesn't care or is completely clueless in how to run a team (personally, I think its both). He doesn't deserve a single ticket sale for his utter incompetence -- Ford Field should be completely empty until he is finally no longer controlling the franchise.

So, which team picks up Larry Johnson now that the Chiefs have released him? He seems like a perfect fit for New England. They could use the help in the backfield, and have been willing to take on outcast veterans in the past.

Pittsburgh could also use help at running back, but that franchise has not been one to go after this type of player, so I do not see Johnson becoming a Steeler.

Johnny,

That was a much-needed win for the Chargers. And maybe Denver will lose its second straight game tonight, which would bring San Diego to within 1/2 game of the Broncos (Denver having a game-in-hand). And they play each other once more (in two weeks) during the regular season. And guess who the Broncos get after that? The four-losses-in-a-row New York Giants (one of three on Thanksgiving Day). Both the Chargers and the Broncos play the Eagles this year (Denver visits Philadelphia, while the Chargers get the Eagles in San Diego's back yard). And the Broncos get Indy in a few weeks, which could be a real test for Denver.

One more week, one more piece of evidence that the Bengals are for real and the Broncos are not. Unfortunately, the local CBS affiliate decided this area would be more interested in the KC - Oakland game than the Cincy - Pittsburgh game, so I missed watching the Steelers lose (I guess that's a good thing for this Steeler fan).

Speaking of KC - Oakland, I did flip to the game a few times. This is the first time I've seen JaMarcus Russell play. I've read how bad he is, but even those descriptions did not do justice to how truly horrible a QB this guy is. He may be worse than Ryan Leaf, if that is possible!

I went to bed at half time of the Pats - Colts game, and was impressed with how New England was playing. I was quite surprised to wake up this morning to see they lost. What happened?
