When 'Glee' hits DVD- how much is it going to cost

I watched the 'Glee' pilot tonight, and enjoyed it even more than I did the first time it aired. In fact, I'm already looking forward to buying the first season on DVD on the basis of that one episode. But if the rest of the shows have the same amount of musical content, what is that season set going to cost? Of course they probably negotiated broadcast and homevideo rights at the same time, but it must have cost them a fortune. I wonder how that will translate into the DVD price.

According to EW (I think that's where I read the article) there are 67 songs in the 13 episodes in Season 1.  The story said that "Don't Stop Believin'" was a huge deal to get since Journey is very picky about their catalog.  I have a feeling it could be a bit on the higher end.

I'm guessing, even though it is only 13 episodes, that it will be priced as if it was a full season set.  Probably in the $30 to $40 range is my guess, but it should totally be worth it judging from the pilot episode.  The hype and reviews about this show might help offset the costs for the music licensing.  The biggest thing going against it is the FOX network and their horrible track record w/critically acclaimed shows not performing to their ridiculous standards.

I hope you're right with that price estimate - but I paid that much for Fantasy Island, and for season sets of Beverly Hills 90210 where they butchered the soundtrack.

^ The difference is that Glee is produced in age where home video is the norm so it's much more likely (but not guaranteed) that they've also paid to use the music for DVD in addition to the TV broadcast.

I've also heard that the producers are approaching artists directly, and getting an enthuiastic response about being including in the show.  In particular, Billy Joel has said that they can use any song in his catalog. 

I can't see music substitution being a problem for Glee. 

Hopefully they price it decently.  With Hi-Def airings, I'm recording them and will just cut my own discs rather then pay an jacked up price to get all the music, or a competitive price to have the episodes butchered.

Well there you have it; $50 for 13 episodes. That's a huge chunka change.

$34.99 works for me. The music element gives the show a higher re-watchability factor for me. I hope they have a "skip to the music" option as they did on the first Partridge Family season, so you can just watch all the musical numbers back to back.

Besides being produced in an era when DVD rights should be negotiated up front, in many (most?) cases in this show, they're not using the original recordings -- they're performances recorded specifically for the show. So while they have to pay the publishing rights for the song, they are not also paying the performance rights for the original recording, and that can make a difference. It won't be 13 episodes in the complete first season set.  Fox ordered the back nine in September, making it a full 22 episode season. 

Its still going to be a 13 episode set - its just going to be a "Season 1 - Volume 1" set instead of a "Complete First Season".

I know a lot of people hate split seasons, but it isn't a bad idea.

First, the cost of 22 episodes would make this show price prohibitive for a number of people - especially blind-buyers.

Second, because the DVDs are coming out during the break after the first 13 episodes, it will hopefully help the show find an even larger audience by letting people who missed out, catch-up before they air the back 9.

i agree with you. I still want this dvd, because it is one of my favourite superfriend shows. I am still hoping to see Speed Buggy, Jabberjaw and few other cartoons release.
